Big surprise the Nostalgia Critic didn't grow up watching this one, but after years of people asking around Christmas, he's finally giving his thoughts on Barbie's first DVD adventure, Barbie in the Nutcracker.

Barbie in the Nutcracker is a 2001 animated fantasy film co-produced by Mainframe Entertainment and Mattel Entertainment, and distributed by Artisan Home Entertainment. Loosely adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", and featuring music based from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet, The Nutcracker, it marked the character's first film since the 1987 television specials; Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World and Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth, with Kelly Sheridan providing the voice of Barbie. It was also the first Barbie movie to be computer-animated.

Doug, there's like 47 of these movies. You just opened up a real can of worms.

Nostalgia Critic: "HI BARBIE!"
Barbie: "HI, DOUG!"

Petition for Doug to cover ALL of the Barbie movies as Nostalgia Critic. I grew up with Barbie, being a real girly girl, so would love to hear his thoughts on these flicks.

What if told you, that there's ANOTHER Barbie movie with Tim Curry as the villain?

@kayhaven4710 1 year ago

You have just summoned the ENTIRE Barbie fandom.

I hope you’re ready. 😂

Fun fact: Kelly Sheridan was the first voice actress of Barbie in the 21st century and also the actress who voiced her for the longest time between 2001 and 2016 and some few years in between, beginning with this movie.

"Let's watch 'Barbie in the Nutcracker' a 43 year old man just said that."

And I just spit out my tea laughing.

It looks like Doug is going to have to review all FIFTEEN Barbie animated movies now. Including the Rapunzel and Mermaid films.

This and the Swan Lake movies honestly made me grow a nice appreciation for the music style of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Tim Curry is unironically the best thing about the movie then again that’s nothing new for Curry, man always gives 100% to any role he’s given

As someone who loves the ballet, and has subsequently read the original book and watched the majority of film adaptations of that book, I can't believe I'm saying this, but...

...I actually consider this to be one of the better film adaptations out there. (and it's not very good, but honestly, neither is the original book)
Infact I can confidently say the ballet is the only reason outside of nostalgia that anyone remembers this story fondly at all.

Like Tamara said “For every one star movie Tim Curry’s in he’s the reason they have that one star.”

@heidiceciliehernes695 1 year ago

Fun fact: The little girl Barbie is teaching ballet is her little sister. She has canonically three little sisters btw.

RIP Tim Curry

I came here today to pay my Respects to Tim Curry

@maxmeidl4909 1 year ago

Tim Curry as the Mouse King is without a doubt the highlight of this movie.

@MushroomHat 1 year ago

Not only has Tim Curry been in two Barbie movies as the villain but Kelsey Grammer, Martin Short, Anjelica Huston and Catherine O’Hara have all played villains in Barbie movies. Barbie movies have the best villains.
