Paddington is a 2014 live-action animated comedy film written and directed by Paul King. It was developed from a story by King and Hamish McColl, which was based on the stories of the character Paddington Bear created by Michael Bond. Produced by David Heyman, Paddington stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of the title character, with Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in live-action roles. The film tells the story of Paddington, an anthropomorphic bear who migrates from the jungles of "Darkest Peru" to the streets of London, where he is adopted by the Brown family. Kidman plays a taxidermist who attempts to add him to her collection.

Fun Fact: Karen Jankel, daughter of Paddington's creator, Michael Bond, was almost moved to tears after the first screening she saw. "For me, it was bringing to life the bear that was so real to me. And I think they got it absolutely right."

Fun fact about Nicole Kidman in this movie: she CHOSE to do this.

What I mean by that is, there's a story her agent was going through potential roles for her, and completely skipped over this one assuming (like many) it'd be some stupid kid's movie nobody would care about or remember. Kidman got wind of this and IMMEDIATELY accepted the part, not caring what it was... the reason being she was a massive fan of the original 'Paddington' books when she was a child, and was ecstatic about getting to play a part in the film-adaptation.

So while her acting isn't anything stellar, and her character is a pretty generic kid's movie villain, there is something kinda charming knowing she WANTED to be in this movie, this was like a dream-role for her, even if it didn't allow her to do much. You can easily imagine her turning up on set every day utterly giddy to start filming, and it's kind of adorable to think about.

Fun Fact: The gentleman who raises his glass to Paddington during the taxi ride montage is Michael Bond, the writer of the original novels. He sadly passed on a few months before the sequel was released, though it's dedicated to his memory.

Another Fun Fact: The character of Paddington Bear is based on a lone teddy bear noticed by the author Michael Bond on a shelf in a London store near Paddington Station on Christmas Eve 1956. Bond bought it for his wife and was inspired to write a story. The outline of the lonely bear at Paddington Station was inspired by old newsreels showing trainloads of child evacuees leaving London during World War II with labels around their necks and their possessions in small suitcases.

Paddington didn't even need to be a great film. It was enough just to have avoided the pitfalls of other attempts to bring classic characters to live-action, but the fact that it not only cleared that hurdle but managed to actually retain that since of charm that made it's source material so beloved in a miracle in and of itself.

As a Brit myself Ive always felt like the character of Paddington is one of the best things the UK has to offer the world and this movie is just one of those movies that remains to be a delightful and unapologetically wholesome ride and Im happy more and more people have seen it and the more successful the film series has become with the third movie already out now here in the UK. I honestly did not know the trailer was so bad for a lot of people? But if Transformers One has shown me anything, its not to judge a movie by a trailer too quickly, especially if that movie turns out to be really great

I will say while I think Paddington was a cute film. The 2nd film is a masterpiece!!! Please see it!!

Can't believe Doug got through this whole movie without pointing out how about half the cast from this film are also in Wonka! 🤣 Even more in the second film!

I can't believe I've been watching Nostalgia Critic for most of my life. AVGN shaped my taste in video games, Nostalgia Critic shaped my taste in movies, and Toddintheshadows shaped my taste in music. About to have my first child so I guess I've been looking back a bunch.

I guess Doug wasn't kidding about dropping the joke about Jim Broadbent being 'The British guy that seems to be in everything but you never remember what his name is'

I liked that joke.

20:31: In 2022, a few months before she died, Paddington had tea with Queen Elizabeth II and we learnt she kept a marmalade sandwich in her handbag; it's kind of cool and heartwarming

2:50 When I heard that this movie is now 10 years old I instantly felt old. I remember when this movie came out and I remember seeing the trailers. I can't believe that was 10 years ago. Also if you were wondering im 16!

That's Simon Farnaby playing the guild member talking to the disguised Mr. Brown. One of the main writers and comedians in Horrible Histories and absolutely hilarious! If you ever needed someone to perfectly depict Caligula's insanity, that would be him.
