I am a retired qualified motor Mechanic, now 79 years of age, and own a 2016 Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost hatchback. In June 2026 as the car was now 10 years old, at 26,500 miles, I carried out the huge job of renewing the wet timing belt and oil pump drive belt, which I did outdoors on my driveway, under a gazebo, in rainy Scottish weather. It was a huge job to undertake, stripping half the engine to get access to the wet timing belt and also to access the oil pump belt and check the oil pump inlet pipe strainer was not blocked, Having done all that, I found that both wet belts were in perfect condition and the oil pump inlet pipe strainer was absolutely clear of any rubber particles. However, I have always renewed the engine oil religiously every year and used the correct Ford recommended specification and viscosity of engine oil, which is extremely important for the reliability of these wet belts. I purchased all the correct timing tools, including the "5 to 1" torque multiplier that is vital to remove the extremely tight crank pulley bolt and to retighten it to the correct specified tightness. The amount of access around the engine is very tight, so it is a nightmare of a job and my arms were covered in black and blue bruises to prove it, so it is not a job that I would ever consider doing again.

2017 1.0 Ecoboost - regularly serviced and no problems whatsoever. Changed the belt at nine and a half years and belt condition was fine

Please please don't buy a.1.0l eco boost .
I speak from experience
I own and still drive ( got no choice )
A1.0 l focus estate 2015
So it been fully serviced every 5 k miles
I had the wet belt changed at ,62k miles
At 66k head gasket blew no warning just blew new engine
They are just ticking time bombs
So no matter how much you service them if they are going to blow they will blow
Just be cautious  if buying one

we're all looking at the pebbles what else was you saying, LOL

Ford went from the highly reliable and respected Sigma engine to this mess. Completely self inflicted. These engines have tarnished their reputation in Europe.

We have a 2015 B Max 1.0l ecoboost. Had it from new, which is an advantage as I know the full history and had the chance to do lots of preventative maintenance from the start.  Always had the correct Castrol Ford oil. I changed the wet belt myself in our little single garage 18 months ago. Belt was in great condition and only slightly discoloured after 9.5 years and 40000 miles. Ours does mainly short journeys. School runs and shopping and it’s great for that. I think if they’re maintained properly and serviced regularly then the problems can be avoided.

The core issues with these is that people don't service them. They then ignore, or are ignorant of, dash warning lights.
I know of a driving school ecoboost that is on 135k miles, on its original belt; the owner changed the oil every 5k miles.

These engine videos are brilliantly educational, informative and interesting all at the same time. Fantastic work Lee. Looks like you have been very busy with your stones too! 😂👍😎

Engine Strip Down .... I need a sit down for a strip down these days 😁 So the main drive belt goes from wet to chain and oil pump drive stays wet but with added stress of a useless tensioner to make that the problem instead. What a time to be alive. One step forward and two steps back every time.

Excellent video Lee, can you please quickly do a follow up video on the 1.6L and 1.5L versions used in the ST fiesta and focus, it sounded like you meant to cover it in this video and then forgot? Same info on age specifications, belt types, gearbox type would be insanely useful, thanks.

Who the hell thought that wet belts were a good idea ffs 🤦

I have a 1.0 Fiesta ST-Line Ecoboost.
Paranoid, as I am, I had the belts and water pump changed at 48k.
Despite full service history, the main belt had already started to faulter.
Main dealer price,  £1400. I paid £1100 at a reputable garage that I have used for many years, and with various cars.

64 plate 1lt ecoboost 107000 miles same belt no major issue.

I had a 2017 1.0 ecoboost auto fiesta with 85k miles on clock, I changed the oil myself. Interesting it lasted that long with no big issues. Got shot of it just incase.

I have owned a 2018 Mazda CX3 manual since new. I've done 102000 miles and all it's cost me is a battery, ABS sensor, tyres and brakes. Most reliable car I've ever owned.

Thank you for your views, interesting.

Comprehensive information on them .thank you. Have been tempted to buy a ford focus with a blown engine because they are so cheap, but bottled it. Just dont trust them.

Nice to see the pitch update in progress

Never owned an eco boost and after this never will, looking forward to the pitch update👍
