It's SuMetal's(the lead singer) 27th birthday today!!!! Happy birthday SuQueen!!!!

Gimme Chocolate has been named by numerous publications as one of the most important metal songs of the last 20 years.

The fun thing about that Gimme Chocolate version is Su is intentionally singing in a more cutesy voice to sound like she did back when she was a kid performing the song.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 Did you notice a difference of the costume between "Light and Darkness" and "Gimme Chocolate." These two songs were performed in different shows with different setlist (Day-1 & Day-2).
"Difference" and "Diversity" is another name of BABYMETAL. "Light and Darkness" again conveys a totally new flavor to me, something like mixture of anxiety and its sublimation (towards good or bad).
In an interview, Su mentioned a dichotomy of BABYMETAL in this song. She said "I am not sure whether I am on the illuminant side or in the shadow. My perspective changes while singing." [source : Japanese magazine "PMC" vol.27  page 42]. High and low undulation of Su's voice with maturity and sharp moves by Moa and Momoko brought about various emotions.
I witnessed both shows at the venue. Especially, the Day-2 was the show where Momometal was inducted as the 3rd girl officially. The new and glaring era has begun and I was honored to be one of the audience on the day to commemorate. The audience there was, without doubt, basking in the light coming from 3 illuminants.

Amazing double reaction, and what a dichotomy as well!

Light and Darkness literally speaks about a “toxic” love that keeps pulling one in even though they are trying to escape.

And Gimme Chocolate is just girls wanting chocolate and goofy fun, LOL.

On Babymetal’s production: They have an amazing team writing and composing the music, with the Kami Band playing it live, and of course, the gals performing the vocals snd choreography. Babymetal is a large team effort!

Also, happy birthday to Su-metal!

🎉🎂🥳🤘🦊

I was at the concert where this was filmed and you are correct that there is a bit of post production on this video, but probably less that you would think. Su-metal is actually that good. This performance was only the third time they had ever played Light & Darkness live, and it always takes a few shows for Su to hone her performance of a new song.

Babymetal is confusing to a lot of people from the metal fandom because they don't operate anything like a conventional metal band where the performers write the songs, play the instruments, and perform the shows. Babymetal are really an idol group that does metal, rather than a band, which is part of the reason they are so polarizing, because metal fans have a lot of preconceived notions about what a metal band should be and Babymetal don't conform to those expectations at all. For their own part, Babymetal don't call themselves a band, they refer to themselves as a "metal dance unit".

Babymetal are managed by the Amuse talent agency, which is an idol management company. They have a producer, Kobametal, who is the creator and mastermind of the whole Babymetal project. They have a team of song writers that create songs for them, although the girls have started to get more involved in the songwriting process in recent times; Su-metal is credited as the lyricist for the song Divine Attack on their most recent album. They also have a choreographer, Mikiko Mizuno, who designs their dance routines, as well as costume designers, and a whole production team that create their live shows. Babymetal is the product of the combined work of many people, and the whole organization that makes their shows possible is referred to as Team Babymetal. In this sense, Babymetal are very much more an idol group than anything like a conventional band, which is why you occasionally see accusations of them being a "fake band" or "industry plants", as they function completely differently to anything in the metal scene.

When Babymetal perform live, they are accompanied by the Kami Band, who are top tier professional session musicians handpicked by Kobametal to accompany Babymetal. There are actually two Kami Bands, one made up of Japanese musicians, and one made up of American musicians. The Kami band for the past two years have been almost exclusively the American Kami Band, with the lineup being pretty consistent throughout. The Kami Band for this show and most of their recent tour is Chris Kelly (guitars), CJ Masciantonio (guitars), Anthony Barone (drums), and Clint Tustin (mostly) on bass, with Ryan Neff and Matt Deis filling in at times for some of the other tours.

I answered your questionnaire, so hopefully my answers are helpful.

Gimme Chocolate has a serious theme. In Japan, on Valentines Day, girls are expected to give chocolate to all the guys and coworkers they know. This is called giri choco, or obligation chocolate, and it is becoming a controversial practice. Anyway, this song was released for Valentine's Day, and they're not  giving away chocolate; they're eating it. Babymetal is a band with layers of meaning that often go deeper than the surface.

When I first ran across Babymetal 3 or 4 years ago, I was at first put off a bit by the fact they don't play the instruments, but the Kami Band is just so solid, it was easy to get past. And then I ended up down the rabbithole, watching content from when they were little kids still going to the Sakura Gakuin arts academy together. It's the whole story for me, and then Su-Metal's delicious voice!!!

Light and Darkness is a song that many metalheads don't like, but I love it.
Gimme Chocolate is a song that many metalheads don't like, but I love it.

The original release of this song the girls...were well girls. Su had just turned 16 and Moa and at that time Yui were 14 each. So there is inherently a child like skew to the song. The video has 200,000,000 views. I really like your reaction format and doing the double videos really lets us viewers sit back and just enjoy. Great job, Thanks.

I love Babymetal because it's modern metal done right.  Much of modern metal includes a lot of screaming and growling, which is frankly reduces the genre to embarrassing self-parody.  I also hate having idiots with gastrointestinal issues screaming at me.

Babymetal, on the other hand, is basically the exact opposite - heavy instrumentation with great riffs, accompanied by contrasting sweet vocals that do vastly more than the screaming and whatever to get their point across.  And the hardness of the music hits infinitely harder as well.

Gimme Chocolate was the first BABYMETAL song I heard. At first I was like "Oh wow this is pretty heavy" and started headbanging to it, then the girls started dancing and I was like "Alrighty. Didn't expect that type of dance for metal. But hey at least they can dance well" and then they started singing and i had the most taken aback face of all time. And then a few seconds later i said "Huh.. ok this should feel totally out of place, so why am I still headbanging? Ok I can't stop moving. I think I'm loving it" lol XD

The intros before some BABYMETAL live songs are backing tracks.  It gives them a minute to catch their breath and get a drink before the song starts, since they are dancing hard for the whole show.

I saw Babymetal live this year. I was in the second row from the barrier. These girls are absolutely spectacular in person and the stage presence of Su-metal is second to none!

Light and Darkness is still one of my favorite songs, and it still doesn't get reacted to much. I would suggest Road of Resistance from the same PIA Arena 2023 concert next.

Happy Happy Birthday to Queen Suzuka Nakamota.  Best wishes!

I started watching Baby metal reactions. Now I think you are GORGEOUS!!!!

Nice reaction! This PIA Arena version of Light and Darkness is wonderful.

Hope you finally got your tickets?
Your reaction to Gimme Chocolate is most of us on the first listen. It's one of their earlier songs from when they were still kids and trying to hook younger audiences, but cannot be ignored or forgotten 🍫🤘
Light and Darkness is an overlooked masterpiece and is a great contrast for how they have matured as performers.
