"The ONE" is considered a kind of love letter to their fans, also known as "The ONE". It originated when they returned from their very first world tour in 2014, impressed by the overseas fans learning the Japanese lyrics to sing along. So, in order to return the favor, they decided to write this one, using a melody from "Tales of the Destinies".
It was written by Mish-Mosh, a duo formed by Nobuaki Miyasaka and Sari Miyasaka (now Shigemura) and Kobametal himself as lyricist (BABYMETAL's producer and the person who came out with all this concept). All of them also wrote "Tales of the Destinies" alongside Norikazu Nakayama (aka Norimetal).
It has a version half in Japanese and half in English (this one) and also another version fully in English.

Fun fact: all four past and present members of BABYMETAL have taken a little ride on a flying platform at the Yokohama Arena, since Momoko did so during her two spectacular entrances for “Headbanger!” and “Meta Taro” at the two Legend-MM concerts in 2024.

I stumbled upon Babymetal by chance in Cologne, Germany, in 2014. It was a concert with an audience of about 400 people. I didn't know what to expect, but I was thrilled. Since then, I’ve followed the girls' careers much like the growth and development of my own children. To me, "The One" is something of an anthem for the Babymetal family. When a 60-year-old metalhead and the teenage girls next to him shout "Babymetal" in unison at a concert, we are all one big family.

The One has Japanese and English versions because (as you surmised correctly at 7:50) it is a Thank You song for the fans. Moa once said that she kept looking ahead as she thought if she looked down her tears would fall on the audience. Every one of whom would probably have felt blessed to have Moa's tears fall on them! Su was nearly 17-18 here and Moa and Yui were 16 so it must have been an amazing and emotional moment for them all. Watching them makes me feel as proud as if I was watching the grandkids all starring in roles in the school nativity!

I love this music video! The music and the visuals fit the lyrics so perfectly! I can’t even imagine how awesome it must have felt to be at that show in person.

The song had it's world premiere as the show opener on the previous night, December 12th, 2015.
This performance with the flying pyramid was the encore song the next night.
When their producer Koba asked the BABYMETAL members what kinds of things they wanted to do on stage, Su said that she would like to fly.
So they came up with the pyramid idea.
Apparently, none of the members are afraid of heights.
They said it was difficult to stick to the choreography, when they wanted to wave to everyone below.    : )
After noticing that fans in the UK and USA would make an effort to learn the Japanese lyrics of their songs, they thought that singing 'The ONE' in English would be a good way to thank the fans outside of Japan.
The version of this song on the international release of Metal Resistance is entirely in English.
This mixed Japanese/English version is on the domestic (Japanese) release of the album.

We are "THE ONE" - remember, when Babymetal calls "WE ARE" at the end of their concerts, and we respond "BABYMETAL", it is because they say that all of us (the fans) are Babymetal. See the comments by the usual lore masters regarding the other info for this beautiful song

Oh boy, this is the big one. On the surface, this is a nice song. But if you really consider yourself a fan and are invested in this group, this song takes on a whole new meaning. Babymetal, if you immerse yourself, can be a community. And in this day and age where division and negativity seem to make up a large amount of discourse, the Babymetal community is wholesome, supportive, and positive. This song reflects that and always leaves me feeling so uplifted

Also, leaving this comment before finishing, but the construction of the lyrics for this song are important for the message
"We are the one, together we're the only one, you are the one, you're the only one" it reinforces that yes, Babymetal are the One, but also you and I, individuals, are the one also. The One isnt just the band, it isnt just the collective fans. The song makes it clear that the One is ALL of us, the fans, the girls, the band and everyone behind the group. It doesnt just depersonalize the message saying its to a group, the lyrics make it personal and directs the message to both individuals and the whole. I got a bit messy with my explanation, but that seems to go a step beyond what other bands do with fan tribute songs to make it personal to individuals listening

Great reaction again! They said in an interview, that they were touched by all the fans all over the world, who are not Japanese, that learned Japanese to sing together with BABYMETAL. So touched, that they wanted to make a song especially for all of their fans. That´s why there is the version you watched, half English, half Japanese, and there is a version that SU-METAL sings entirely in English. IIRC, she said that she wanted to challenge herself by singing a song entirely in English, and which song would haven been better suited than "The One"?

THE ONE is more than a song, it is a concept. THE ONE embraces everybody who is at a BABYMETAL concert. All the ladies, all the Kamis, the stage crew, the sound technicians, the audience, even the security people. There is a compilation video showing security guys reacting to BABYMETAL, you will find it at the channel "Omajination". Great fun to watch! Sometimes there is even an audience at the other side of the world, and of course they are part of THE ONE as well😄 The concert at Wembley Arena 2016 for example... there was a live watching event in Japan at the time the Wembley concert happened, and at one point you could see the Japanese audience on the video screens at the back of the stage.

The flying tetrahedron might be an idea that was born by SU-METAL´s wish to fly. IIRC, she said something along this line in an interview. Additionally, they were always a little bit sad, because the people at the back of the venue couldn´t see them most of the time, so they wanted to be near those people, if somehow possible. Well, the amazing stage crew made it possible 😉

There´s a little detail to this performance that barely anyone mentions... you watched "Momobanger", which happened at "LEGEND MM", which in turn was held at Yokohama Arena. Yes, the same arena. And she descended from the roof of the venue onto the center stage. She flew, like SU-METAL, YUIMETAL, and MOAMETAL before her.

There is an artist, huge BABYMETAL fan, too, who drew a picture, I think the English word is "hidden picture puzzle", in German this kind of picture is called "Wimmelbild"... his name is PJMetal. He caught both scenes in this picture... Yokohama Arena 2015, and Yokohama Arena 2024. And YUIMETAL, standing within the tetrahedron, and MOMOMETAL, standing on her platform, are greeting each other. I almost cried.

I think if you search for "PJMETAL_ART" you will find him, and his BABYMETAL art. I´m sure you will love it. And you might find the hidden picture puzzle I mentioned 😉

Amongst many other things, BABYMETAL is love. The ladies love their fans, and vice versa. That´s probably why "The One" came into being.

Last performance of "The One" was at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, 2025.

Great reaction.🦊The One' was the last song on the second album in 2016 (following straight on from 'Tales of the Destinies' which is their homage to Dream Theater's 'Dance of Eternity' - this song started life as part of that song but was separated quite early in the writing process).

This was the version from the Japanese edition of the album, so it is the half and half English - Japanese version.  The international edition has the full English version that the girls had challenged themselves to do as a mark of respect and appreciation to the foreign fans who they noticed had been learning Japanese to sing along with them as they toured the world.
This is effectively their love letter to the fans (who they also named "THE ONE").❤

Being the official video this had the studio audio and of course you couldn't hear the crowd all singing along as you would in a live version.

On The First Take when Momometal was revealed as the official third member in 2023, as part of that reveal they released an "unfinished" version ie it is stripped back with piano and strings only (also it is very much shortened having just the first verse).
Legend S is possibly the best unfinished start going into the full version, Tokyo Dome had the extended full English version, Stairway to Living Legend probably the most emotional 'unfinished' version (this was how they announced in 2021 that they would be disappearing and taking a hiatus for an unspecified time, it is a longer version of what they did on The First Take).

There are many great performances of this song. I like a recent one at Intuit Dome.

Most groups  fans are called Armys but , BabyMetals fans are the One .
The Girls  , The Team behind them and The Fans all 3 are needed to bring us the  phenomenon that is  BabyMetal  . They heard foreign fans singing  in Japanese and realised fans were learning the  Japanese lyrics to sing along with them  . In appreciation the One was written to thank the fans . 😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼
