I think something highly fascinating is how much Ben has talked about Sonic-adjacent subjects for like a decade now and still knows nothing about Sonic

I'm simultaneously incredibly happy and incredibly personally sorry that this is the niche you've managed to carve out. I wish you the best for your sanity with the continuation of these products

Bro I think you know more lore than we do :o

49:17 “The way that atoms work is, like, really strange” - scientists, probably

Saying Rob Paulson in a manner that implies he is not one of the most prolific American cartoon voice actors of the last 30 years

Yoinking "I'm sorry you had to hear all this" as the best possible way to end any future 80 minute scripts.

Muffy McClung is what they called me back in my sorority days

My favorite Bubsy fact is how YouTuber Jenny Nicholson owns like two the rarist Bubsy plushies in the world because her dad worked on the game but she doesn’t actually care that much about Bubsy. And whenever they appear in the background of her videos Bubsy fans freak out.

Bubsy die-hard. Will edit with corrections and other comments.

4:05 I keep forgetting that Bubsy has direct links to Zork - obviously the text adventure link is well-known, but that specific series being connected to Bubsy is still something overlooked. I don't know if you mention this on CEOTFK since I'm not there yet, but a lot of that game's quirks make more sense with the knowledge of Bubsy's text adventure roots.

9:01 Doctorclu is really the top dog of the Bubsy fandom, he has done a ton of work for preserving and defending the franchise.

9:43 THANK YOU SO MUCH! You get it! This - alongside another myth relating to concept art (that I'm pretty confident you won't fall into given how thorough your research has been, a lot of these connections were never known to me) - is really my "are we in good hands?" test whenever I see someone talk about Bubsy. He was meant to be an annoying egotist, they didn't try to make 90s-Sonic/Bugs Bunny character and screw it up!

12:17 Yep, no forged concept art. That aside, you're exceeding my expectations and I feel like I won't need to say much going forwards

14:34 Bubsy was voiced by Brian Silva in Claws Encounters, he was voiced by Paulsen in the pilot, 2, and Fractured Furry Tales.

35:28 - While it's not known why these swaps were made, pre-release content shows pies as being planned for the console version but cut - probably in favor of Nerf.

37:25 - Yeah, I'm on camp "Bubsy 2 is worse" and in fact I think it's the worst Bubsy game total. It might just be that I'm not a fan of super-open level design; minigames; or swappable weapon systems in platformers, I dunno. All the Bubsy games are either bad or generic to play (thus far) but 2 feels like it kinda got the aesthetic and vibe off, less "Tex Avery" and more "Wacky World of Tex Avery", if that makes sense

38:21 - I think you are right that Bubsy 2 didn't sink the ship. Bubsy was never going to last - he was Accolade's only "mascot" game, designed around ludicrously specific era tropes (animals with attitude, retro cartoon aesthetic revivals), and they didn't have a Kirby or Ecco the Dolphin to fall back (and gain experience) on. It's frankly a miracle that Bubsy survived into the 3D jump, not a surprise he died there (or well, got comatose)

46:56: Aiming jumps is a lot easier once you figure out the glide button - from then you should always glide without exception.

50:41 Bubsy 3D was based on Chuck Jones' Duck Dodgers cartoons. Jones was miscredited for working on 3D in some magazine articles, though devs have disputed this

1:04:01 - There is a bit of a minor stop gap in the story being missed here - Bubsy Two-Fur, a port of the first two games released on Steam Greenlight. Really that game was most notable for confirming that someone out there owns Bubsy, a lot of people thought it was an orphan work for a while and a few people had actually planned Bubsy projects under the false assumption it was public domain.

1:10:49 CommanderVideo was also in Super Smash Bros. as a trophy. Do what you will with this info.

You did a pretty good job here! I disagree with most opinions, but your research was very thorough, both for in-universe and out-universe lore.

I think the ultimate cosmic fate for Bubsy at this point is to end up as a Magic card based on how that franchise is going. It's destiny.

1:03:24 “Capital has the ability to subsume all critiques into itself. Even those who would critique capital end up reinforcing it instead.”

Real ulillillia hours

Ah, my monthly shot of absurdly specific lore

Edit: for real though, thanks for the great videos. I was having a crap day but then you and Big Yellow posted and now I'm giddy

when I noticed Bubsy 3D James Turrell Retrospect on the board I popped off. That shit DEFINED me

There's actually two variants of the Car enemy in Bubsy 1. The yellow ones are the ones you can jump on, and they give you insane air when you do.

The other one is the red car, which is a convertable that you can't jump on. If you do, it will--and I'm not kidding--close its roof over Bubsy and drive away as he stares out of the window with a terrified expression. You literally get kidnapped.

Nice to know that as far back as a year after its release, people were trying to prove themselves by writing essays about the design of Sonic the Hedgehog. Some things never really change.

I said it before and I'll say it again I LOVE how you explain things.
You explan exactly like I do, making me never get lost. Your Bionicle video was so good I bought a Tahu on eBay.

Bubsy being directly linked to Sonic Dream Collection is just Chef's kiss perfect. This shit is wild.

You shouldve waited till the purrfect collection came out to make this. The collection actually acknowledges the James Turrel retrospective in the museum.
