The grandfather and grandmother were the main actors in the original 1953 version.

The sound their ships make gives me goosebumps. every. time.

The splinter in the girl's finger? It's kind of the same thing. She says her body will just naturally push it out. In the same way, the earth "pushed out" the alien invaders that didn't belong.

A great depiction of how humans are sometimes more dangerous to one another in life threatening situations than the things actually causing the threat to life and the dangerous situation in the first place!

Cinematography and Sound Design in this film is 10/10.

Walking up to the bridge, it was not snow. It was human ash floating down from the skies.

It's crazy that it's been 21 years since this movie came out.

no Ice Cube in sight

In contrast to the original film, which followed the lead scientist and what was going on with the leadership to fight this hopeless battle, Spielberg wanted to remake this but following regular people. This is how you retell a well known story and make it different without destroying the original

They actually bought a passenger plane for the crash scene. It had been decommissioned and was going to be recycled anyway. They purchased it, and cut it into large sections to transport it to the set. They also built the neighborhood the plane crashed into. Then thry placed debris around, like luggage, clothing, shoes, etc. A whole lot of cost, time and effort for just a few minutes on screen. The set and plane is part of the tour at Universal Studios in California.

@Debnam101 3 months ago

Fun fact, the plane crash scene used a real plane and the plane crash site is at universal studios!

War of the Worlds was the first Hollywood movie I saw as a child.

I hope oak is okay, he seemed more quiet than usual in this video! I love his insight, empathy, and quirkiness he brings to the videos!

This movie traumatized the hell out of me when I first saw this as a kid. I don't think I've ever seen another movie before or since that portrays hopelessness so well.

The thing I always liked about this movie is that Tom Cruise wasn't playing his typical "Hero" roll. Ray was flawed through and through (bad husband, bad father), and even though he went through the "hero's journey" of sorts... he wasn't the hero. He did get the grenade moment, granted, but for the rest of the movie he was just a scared, flawed guy trying to keep his kids alive.

Spielberg was inspired by 9/11 and Afghanistan and Iraq wars at the time, which is partly why the film was as dark as it was, and why it leaned into the helpless feeling.
