YOU DON’T GET TO 500 MILLION FRIENDS WITHOUT MAKING A FEW ENEMIES!

John Humphrey and Jackie Bonsignore watch The Social Network (2010) in this full movie reaction and review ahead of Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning. Directed by David Fincher and written by Sorkin, the acclaimed Facebook drama follows Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Sean Parker, and the Winklevoss twins through the creation of a revolutionary website—and the betrayals, lawsuits, and broken friendships that followed. John & Jackie react to the brutal opening breakup, Mark’s rapid-fire depositions, Sean Parker’s “a billion dollars” speech, the Henley Royal Regatta, Eduardo’s explosive confrontation, and the haunting final friend-request scene.

Directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Gone Girl) and written by Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs, A Few Good Men), The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg (Zombieland, Now You See Me), Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin (The Amazing Spider-Man, Hacksaw Ridge), Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker (Inside Llewyn Davis, Trolls), Rooney Mara as Erica Albright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol), Armie Hammer as Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Call Me by Your Name, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), and Max Minghella as Divya Narendra (The Handmaid’s Tale, Babylon).

John and Jackie discuss Fincher’s precise direction, Sorkin’s razor-sharp dialogue, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Oscar-winning score, Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield’s performances, the movie’s interpretation of Facebook’s founding, and whether The Social Network remains one of the defining films of the 2010s.

They also look ahead to The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s companion film starring Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg, Mikey Madison as Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Jeremy Allen White as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.

Andrew Garfield is so good in this movie.

"The Internet's not written in pencil, Mark, it's written in ink."

"I was your only friend. You had one. friend." Chills. The way this movie simultaneously calms my nervous system and makes me cry over Eduardo Saverin (how???) is astounding.

More than 15 years later, has The Social Network become even more relevant and what do you hope Aaron Sorkin explores in The Social Reckoning?

Jesse and Andrew’s love for each other during the press for this was the best ever
And Andrew is so good

I'm always amused by the reactions to Social Network...people being despicable, toxic, stealing etc. but somehow giving a piece of chicken to a chicken is the most appalling.

@neomoscoso10 11 hours ago

Dropping the 'The' from Facebook was a brilliant input for sure.

Mark saw this entire film and he said he liked it even if some things never happened as portrayed in the film.

When I watched this the first time I remember thinking I thought it was common knowledge that chickens will eat other chickens and what he did was ethically ok. But I looked it up to double check Yes, chickens really will eat other chickens. They’re omnivores, and once one bird is injured and bleeding, the flock may begin pecking at the wound—sometimes severely enough to kill and consume it. Cannibalism is more likely when chickens are overcrowded, stressed, bored, exposed to overly bright lighting, or lacking protein, salt, or certain amino acids. They may also attack a bird that appears sick or weak.

So the chicken-eating-chicken part of The Social Network wasn’t nearly as unnatural as the movie made it sound. The chickens’ tendency to peck and sometimes attack injured or weaker flockmates is one reason birds have sometimes been separated or kept in individual cages. People forget how brutal nature can be at times and real animals don’t behave like the cheerful woodland creatures that helped Snow White etc clean the cottage.

$25 billion to $1.75 trillion in 16 years.
It was an obscene amount of money then and now it's unfathomable.

6:13 YOO JACKIE!! The girl on the date in the opening, Erica, was a fictional character. The wanted an emotional scene to drive the movie but the REAL Mark Zuckerberg denies it had anything to do with a girl or any kind of breakup!

I get that the ending basically sums up that most of the story told by the characters in this movie was nothing but lies, but sadly the story of the founding of Facebook is just another one of those stories where you see how all the people involved in either making or even conceiving of Facebook all could’ve actually worked together and treated each other fairly and with basic human decency. With the sad fact, being that they had no legitimate or rational reason to ever be at each other‘s throats in the first place. Nothing other than simple greed.

"You're not an asshole, Mark. You're just trying so hard to be."

No, he's definitely an asshole. Both the Zuckerberg in this movie and the one in real life.

@AlanParker-v1n 9 hours ago

Around early minute 21, late minute 20, John asked, "how did you not hear about this?"

I think that since Zuckerberg got the email list from Saverin, perhaps he didn't include the twins in the initial email.

@GarrettPope91 6 hours ago

The Social Network is based off the book by Ben Mezrich. Mezrich personally interviewed Eduardo so the book and the film adaptation is based off of Saverin's personal account. That being said, he was more than likely biased even if the actual events played out as described. Great book and awesome movie. Aaron Sorkin has written some of the best scripts of the past 40 years. This is definitely one of them.
