Someone pointed out that the person who made the Sanrio character does have a pattern for it now but the post was from before the pattern release.

I still think telling someone not to replicate it for personal use is silly but can understand why they don’t won’t others replicating and selling it.

However the point still stands that the character is not their IP and they don’t have the rights to it in the same way they would if it was their own design. Thats always the risk you take when you sell someone else’s licensed characters.

It would still be shady if the OP wanted to sell the design but making it for personal use is still fine IMO.

It's not that we aren't "ready" for AI assisted images, WE DON'T WANT IT IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM

Whether it's knitted or crocheted, the blanket will still keep you warm, and the amigurumi will still make you happy.

AI is like lying, if you use it a little, people can’t trust everything else to be real.

I would rather see a blurry, bad lighting, crooked real photo than an AI background. If I see anything AI in a listing, I will never buy anything from that shop 🤷 they're really doing themselves a disservice

Here is my hot take on the knitting vs crocheting debate. I think both are great and that knitting is better for making thinner, less structured fabrics and projects, while crochet is so perfectly suited to three dimensional projects and items where more structure is needed. That isn't to say you can't do structure with knit or flowy with crochet. I think both have their advantages and drawbacks. And both can be used in ways that push the limits of expectations. Some people seem to confuse their OPINION with FACTS.

The more you feed your stuff to AI the better it gets at scamming people too. It's bad overall and people need to stop relying on it for such trivial things

If I somehow ended up in a shop where an employee claimed the yarn was ONLY for knitting, I wouldn’t be able to resist bringing up that I also WEAVE projects, purely to be annoying.

I'm a commercial embroiderer, everyone thinks I can sew.  Give me a pattern and watch me not have a fkkn clue.  

I can repair both kinds of machines though.

Crochet is popular now so that's why she's getting more opinions about her hate for crochet. Fifteen years ago, knitters would turn up their noses when I said I crocheted.  They're similar crafts and I think it's expected people will ask which one you know. I don't see a reason to be that upset about it.  When people tell me they only knit, I give them kudos bc I still find it quite difficult.

I once had someone tell me that crocheters tend to be of lower socioeconomic status. It was the most bizarre, elitist thing I've ever heard. I do both and my crochet projects always seem to require more yarn....

I'm a knitter of about 8 years and I've recently (like a week ago) learned to crochet out of *spite*. Crochet has so many fun, beautiful and amazing patterns (especially plushes) and I was determined to never learn because I hated that crochet got big and popular during covid and  knitting was left in the dust.

But I've finally given in and I must admit, I am genuinely having fun (and I hate it because knitting is my baby XD)

So yeah, I used to shit on crochet because I was jealous and I'd sunk so much time I to knitting.

Buuuuut now I can do BOTH

First, let me say that despite my online name, I am not exclusively "a knitter".

I have sewn since I was about 7, when I would design and sew clothes for my Barbies using scraps of fabric left over from my mom's sewing.

I found a crochet hook in my mom's sewing box at that age and when I asked her about it she told me it was a crochet hook but that she didn't know how to use it. I picked it up along with some string and started messing around with it, and before I knew it I had discovered how to make a chain. I made a bunch of them, called them "wormies" and used them for bookmarks. Okay, now keep in mind, this would have been about 1962 and I didn't have anyone at that time to show me how do do anything else with it.

I learned to embroider at age 9. Then in my high school Home Economics class (1969) I finally had someone to teach me how to do more than make chains with my crochet hook! In 1971 I managed to inherit a "Teach Yourself to Knit the Columbia Minerva Way" booklet from my older sister, who gave up on it after page 5. She  handed it over to me along with a skein of yarn and a pair of size 8 needles ( which I still have...).

At about the same time that I started knitting, my grandma gave me her set of crochet hooks. These are antique steel hooks that she used to crochet lace and doilies. One of the hooks is so small she used sewing thread with it. She said she just couldn't see well enough to do it anymore and I was the only one of her granddaughers who had any interest in needlework.

Over the years I've learned also tatting, needle tatting, tambour embroidery and weaving.

I am now about to turn 71 and I'm still learning needlework techniques.


However, throughout my life I have never let the things I do define who I am. I just enjoy all the doing and tune out the hating.

The thing that bugs me about the first opinion is that yes, a lot of crochet garments are very bulky and ugly. But thats because those are the garments that get showcased. They're on trend. But if you look at designers like Linda Skuja you could see that crochet can be elegant, light, and drapey. It does take way more yarn though I cant argue eith that lmao

Aside from th environment impacts of AI, I don’t like AI backgrounds because it makes me question if the featured product is real or not. I don’t think people have bad intentions when they use AI backgrounds, but it is exhausting seeing it everywhere. I appreciate that this person used her experience as a learning moment.

I don't know why so many knitters look down on crochet 🙄 Ive noticed that crocheters are more accepting of knitters  than knitters of crocheters.

If I create an original design of my dog, Shimmer (complete with the cataract in her right eye), I would expect my intellectual property to be respected. However, if I created an unauthorised pattern for Bluey, I would have absolutely no grounds for demanding the same respect.

I was getting some yarn from a local yarn store just recently because I had run out they asked what I was making I told then a crocheted shawl they looked at me and said "oh no you can't crochet with that yarn its for knitting,  it just wouldn't work"  mind you I had already used 4 hanks of it just needed a few more to finish.   I looked her straight in the eye and said  "yes I can I can with any yarn it just takes some time"   and smiled and made my purches.
