I've heard people call this one of the greatest movies ever made, and now I finally get to experience it for myself.

From the incredible battles and emotional moments to Russell Crowe's unforgettable performance, this movie completely lived up to the hype.

This was an epic journey filled with action, betrayal, revenge, and some truly powerful scenes that I won't forget anytime soon.

maggots are still used in modern hospitals to eat rotten flesh from infected wounds,
without using chemicals : it is very efficient, and non-polluting. This method can save
limbs, or even lives, without expensive drugs. Ancient medecine wasn't sorcery at all.

Some geography : Maximus was fighting in Germany, near Teutoburg, then he crossed
Gaul, and rushed to his estate in Trujillo, in Spain, where he was picked by slaves traders,
to the Roman colony of Zucchabar, in North Africa (former Caesarian Mauritania, now Algeria),
then he went to Rome, died, and finally "flew" to the Elysian Fields, where he joined his family.

(Legionnaires could be of any nationality, Roman natives, or from any country conquered by Rome.
Maximus was actually a Roman soldier, born in the Roman colony of Hispania, from "Italian" settlers.
His estate in Trujillo looks like one in Tuscany, with the rows of cypresses along the private road ! )

Some historical facts for those who are interested:

In real life, Emperor Marcus Aurelius actually died in Germania.

At the beginning of the film, the Romans are facing the last warriors of the Marcomanni tribes, who were defeated after 12 years (Marcomannic Wars – 166–180 AD). The Marcomanni were known for being great warriors and for having some women in their ranks fighting alongside the men (according to Roman historical records). These tribes lived in the region that is now Austria and Czech Republic. This entire region, including modern Germany, was ancient Roman Germania.

In the battle at the Colosseum, Maximus asks who has served in the army and one of the gladiators replies that he served with him at Vindobona. Vindobona is today the city of Vienna, Austria, and at the time was a Roman military camp (castra) with about 30,000 soldiers (6 legions). This place is now the 1st district of central Vienna, there is a museum there and we can see the structures of this ancient camp.

Before the first battle in the Colosseum, Cassius (the one who announces the battle) speaks about the Battle of Zama (October 19, 202 BC), fought between the Romans and the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War and which ended in a Roman victory. This battle is considered by the Romans themselves to be the most famous and as stated in the film, it was a true massacre. In just a few hours, more than 20,000 Carthaginians were killed and tens of thousands more were wounded or captured.

This film was based very loosely on the real emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, but it's almost totally fictional.

Maximus being from Hispania would be like, in modern times, someone from a Canadian province being called by their province name instead of "the Canadian". They would still be Canadian, but also from their province. Like if they called him the Quebecois or something.

italian and spanish are both latin langusges, and latin wouldve been spoken in the entire region back then, so maximus couldve very well be his given name even if he was born in spain

I've known Russell Crowe since L.A. Confidential and I think that movie deserved at least an Oscar, but like Maximus, RC had his revenge - thankfully in this life - with the award-winning Gladiator ❤

The term "Roman" was applied to anyone who had citizenship in the Roman Empire. It could be native Italians, North Africans, Greeks. And in Maximus' case, he was from Spain.

27:00 What you should understand about the word "spaniard" ...is that the geographic area which you think of now as Spain was actually a Province of the Roman Empire named Hispania populated by Roman citizens...essentially culturally Italian and genetically Iberian Celt. All of Hispania was Roman.....including several Emperors that were born there, like Emperor Trajan, Emperor Hadrian, and Theodosius the First, etc. There was no ethnic difference between Spaniard and Roman in Hispania. "Until" Hispania eventually got settled by Visigoth Germanic tribes, and then got conquered by the Moors from north africa, and then got reconquered away from islamic colonialism by Castilians and Catalans who had been pushed into the north by the moors...thus all that isolation away from Roman culture changed their version of Latin language and culture gradually into Hispanic, and eventually Spanish that we think of today as spanish. But when you're watching this movie and hearing Spaniard....you should be thinking "Western Roman".

Hi, Miss Verdy. Maximus is a Roman citizen and general, but he was born in Hispania, which was a Roman province in what is today Spain. It would have been perfectly normal for someone born in the provinces to be given a Latin name.
