"Send 2-3 years soul society and forget"

Just the word Bankai is enough to give you chills and get you hyped. One of the best of any power system in any anime

Bro makes me appreciate the show even more than I already did

I assign you the Schrift C, "the Chef"

Another thing to add about Gin is that his Shikai is named Shinsō (God's Spear). This obviously represents his loyalty to Aizen and contrasts his Bankai (God Killing Spear). This of course could allude to the devil disguising himself as a snake in order to trick God. Just as how Gin tricks Aizen.

"Shikai and bankai are the first and last steps of self actualization of a soul reaper" holy fucking opening absolutly amazing

it's so cool to see that Kubo had such a cultural baggage and traditional knowledge when he wrote Bleach, even if it was unintentional sometimes

The other thing I LOVE about Unohana's arc and the big reveal for her character, which I believe it probably one of the absolute strongest in the entire series, is that her sword's form was a clue from the absolutely beginning!
Most Shinigami's Zanpakuto is a standard katana in their sealed state and not many vary from this model except for a few exceptions like Shisui, but Unohana's Minazuki is not a standard katana, but an odachi, basically the katana-equivalent of a longsword. It's designed to be used either on or against horseback forces, giving them the reach they need to either cut people down on the ground or reach up to take someone out from the saddle or even cut the horse out from under them.
The fact that a healer like Unohana had this giant-ass sword hinted from her very first appearance that something is different about her, which is only compounded by the fact that everyone seems subtly and not so subtly afraid of her. The reader shrugs it off, but it remained one of the big mysteries in Bleach right now until the reveal and, even though the manga of the TYBW was ultimately very rushed and not at its best, that reveal and the fight still was some of the best Bleach ever gave us! A MASTERFUL piece of foreshadowing and payoff!

PEAK CONTENTTTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always been fascinated by Ikkaku and his zanpakuto, because something feels "wrong" with it. We know Ikkaku is strong, but his zanpakuto seems absurdly weak- or at least fragile. It's one of the few wooden formed shikai, and it explodes into pieces every fight he has (also only one to actively require both sheath and blade to shikai). And then again the one time he uses his bankai it shatters to bits like it was nothing, which should imply that it will never be (fully) functional again. It's lead me to theorize that this isn't his true zanpakuto at all.

Kubo answered a question by stating that the blood clotting substance in Hozokimaru's hilt is in fact an ability. It's also only present in its sealed form, and not apart of the skikai. That technically shouldn't be possible, and there only one other zanpakuto that is able to manifest part of its power while still sealed, and that's Zaraki and Yachiru. I believe that Hozokimaru is actually a healing type zanpakuto, but Ikkaku is completely blind to acknowledge it in his desperate wish to be like Zaraki. That healing serum is the one small thing it's able to do try and keep him alive, while the shikai and bankai are fake; just oridinary no power weapons Ikkaku can wield with his own strength. That's why they can and do constantly break so easily, because they're empty shells.

I love the dynamic of Tosen's bankai with Aizen's shikai. Both can be negated from touching the source but tosen removes your senses while aizen forces his vision on you

Blooper: You said Kenpachi's eyepatch devours his "cursed energy". The JJK content left its mark lol

Good video. There is more to Renji's though. By the time he reaches his full Bankai it stops being a monkey and a snake. It is now a legendary Nue. A yokai with a monkey face, a snake tail and tiger limbs (hence why he comes back at the end from training with a tiger print mantle). Another bit is that according to legend the Nue has a dreadful "hyoo hyoo" cry. Which meshes with its old name of Hihiō. It's fitting then that our new fully realized legenday evil monster would fight the people's hero. Mask De Masculine

Here’s my interpretation I did a while back. Ikkaku's supposed to parallel renji in that they both want to surpass or stand on equal footing with their captains. But instead of persevering like renji, ikkaku gave up and chose to be a follower instead.

Shikai: His shikai has two release commands which are "Grow" and "Split". This makes his sword grow into a spear symbolizing him wanting to get stronger to reach and even surpass kenpachi cuz of the spears length kinda like renji and his whip’s reach theme . But the "Split" command breaks apart the spear which represents ikkaku giving up and splitting from his original desire to now die under him. Funny enough though Kubo in a Q&A said the healing cream he uses is the actual ability of the zanpakuto which calls back to his first fight with kenpachi when Kenny told him that surviving a fight with him is his lucky day and that he should cherish that. But his shikai can’t use his true ability cuz shikais represent what the user wants. He wanted to keep living so that he’d get strong enough to beat Kenny one day but now he wants to serve and die directly under him.

Bankai: His bankai is two big swords attached to a big axe with a dragon crest on top by chains. He's quite literally a sleeping dragon in both the power of the bankai that you have to "wake up" and his suppressed ego. This bankai is similar to Gin's in that outside forces influenced the bankai. Just like how gin's bankai turns into dust for a split second which calls back to his relationship with rangiku, how much he loves her and how her zanpakuto turns her sword into dust, the axe is supposed to represent kenpachi's true shikai while the dragon crest represents ikkaku. It visually shows how kenpachi limited his growth cuz the dragon crest works as a gauge with measures to a certain point. Like it shows what ikkaku thinks the limits of his strength is.

There are two types of bankai:

Type 1: Bankais that are just stronger versions of their shikais are from people who are honest and true to themselves. Examples are byakuya, ichigo, renji, toshiro, kenpachi, rose, etc.

Type 2:Bankai's that are opposite of the shikai ability are dishonest people who hide their true personalities. Examples are kisuke, shinji, shunsui, unohana, ichibei, soi fon, etc.

Ikkaku pretends to be type 1 when he is actually type 2. Since he gave up on surpassing kenpachi and hides his bankai he became a dishonest person to himself and others around him. His actual shikai is a healing type zanpakuto while his bankai is the opposite and is a power type but we are lead to believe his shikai was also a power type when it is not.

1:16:49 Started watching Bleach in grade school like 10 years ago. Hearing Unohana saying “Bankai” has to be in my top 5 favorite parts of the series. Everyone’s fear of Unohana always felt like a weird quirk. I assumed she was just scary and unhinged. Not a notorious, stoic, and bloodthirsty psychopath. Everyone in the Soul Society knew. No one ever spoke about it outright (at least in the anime, haven’t read the manga). Her personality was a 10+ year mystery and misdirect.

Her fight with Kenpachi was beautifully animated. The minimal dialogue was perfect. The shadow over her face gave me chills. The reason for the fight was intriguing. It was a big “holy shit” / jaw on the floor moment. As much as I love seeing Ichigo’s evolved Bankai and outfits (cold as hell), I gotta admit that this was special. Awesome character and scene.

Now you are covering Bleach?? I will enjoy this :D !!!!!

1:21:17 Funny slip up, you have been doing lots of JJK lol
