Who was Israel? In this episode of MythVision, Derek Lambert speaks with archaeologist Gad Bar about the origins and evolution of Israelite identity through archaeology and ancient inscriptions.
They examine the earliest references to Israel, the mysterious disappearance of Israel as a clearly identified people in the external record, the relationship between Judeans and Samaritans, the rise of a broader Yahwistic identity, and the importance of Mount Gerizim.
The discussion also explores Yahweh's possible northern origins, ancient naming practices, Samaritan inscriptions from Delos, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and how biblical traditions may reflect later attempts to reconstruct an ancient identity.
Was “Israel” always the same thing? The archaeological evidence suggests the answer is far more complicated.

(*Edit* I believe it's Gnostic Informant who's interrupting a lot; I'm not familiar with the characters as I've only listened to Mythvision once before - and really enjoyed it. Something I'd love for all hosts/people in general to understand; you don't need to constantly prove your intelligence by weighing in on everything said to show you know what is being talked about. It actually subtracts from your EQ and comes across as ego being in control. I am not the host of a podcast/show but I am by no means immune to this and I'm grateful for every time that I realize I'm butting in unnecessarily.)
