The Rest Is Entertainment

Did Strictly make a mistake by casting three presenters? Who would Richard cast as the next Traitors? Is the BBC erasing comedy history?

Strictly Come Dancing’s new presenting setup has seen headlines claiming the show is in ‘crisis’. Does the new hosting trio have a fundamental flaw, or is the real crisis elsewhere?

The BBC has upheld complaints against Katherine Ryan's racy joke about Victoria Beckham on Have I Got News For You. Where should the BBC draw the line on comedy censorship?

A new flock of Celebrity Traitors enters the castle this week. Richard and Marina reveal their picks for a turret trio.

Ah, that's why I've started seeing compilations of banned Mitchell and Webb sketches on YouTube.

I find it funny that Richard talk's about the Strictly Producers ignoring twitter, but the Mitchell and Webb producers can't.

Nope i disagree, the 3 presenters didn’t work, and I think the wasted wage of either Josh or JoJo could be better spent saving the job of some poor regional radio or tv presenter. Emma was great tho’

Increasingly find myself disagreeing with these two. The Mitchell and Webb sketches are comedy. The whole point of comedy is the ability to laugh at any topic. Censoring comedy is never a good route to go down.

Strictly - no need for 3 hosts, Emma is pretty good, Josh just does not look right for this role, and motsi clearly doesn't like him, and johannes is not a presenter and comes across as wooden.

If complaining makes things change, then we need to start complaining about censorship in the thousands; if demands for freedom of expression outnumber those in favour of oppression, maybe freedom will prevail.

Did these Mitchell and Webb sketches receive recent complaints, or did the BBC just make the decision themselves? Because unless there were complaints I think they could’ve just left them as they are and no one would be any the wiser. Adults watching old comedy are intelligent enough to know that comedy is of its time and view it accordingly.

Too often things are called offensive because some people are too thick to understand them in context (such as making fun of racism). We shouldn't devolve to the lowest possible denominator.

I disagree with the M&W censorship. If they're putting the episodes out on streaming, there's a very simple fix. Release both versions, one called "complete" and one called "redacted," and let the viewer choose.

Putting young people on Strictly doesn't make it for a new generation. It's like putting 1960s film stars in vaudeville entertainment. It feels so outdated.

Catherine Ryan’s joke was just a joke. I don’t think she should’ve got in trouble for that.

It's not overly surprising that two who tried to make out last week that Ed sheeran was the bravest little boy in the whole wide world, would be pro censorship 😂😂😂

@Lloydalexanderfan 2 days ago

Blimey, these two really don't like any criticism of Strictly!

@alansouthall8221 2 days ago

richard perrified to criticise anything bbc related. be it puncturing the cosy circle of who hosts strictly or the censorship of comedy .

he cant give an opinion on the new hosts?

his sychophancy is clawing.

@chrisc_1012 2 days ago

BBC's censoring is shameful.

It would cost the BBC almost nothing to have a graphic that's displayed pre-roll like Disney+ does on the old Disney films that were made at times which had different social norms.

@SteMail926 2 days ago

why cant the bbc leave the original programme with a title card explaining that some sketches may be deemed offensive? Culture is important to preserve, and these old sketches reflect the times in which they were made.

@Ukandy19 1 day ago

Good to hear that the general public can’t criticise strictly. Silly us for having an opinion

@evakatz6351 1 day ago

Strongly disagree with Richard’s Twitter/ Strictly take. Johannes is lovely, but it was a wild choice to get someone with no presenting experience to host the biggest live show on TV. Josh might be ok upstairs, but there’s loads of actual presenters- Angela Scanlon, Fleur East, Rylan who would have been better.

It’s also not true that the reason people are annoyed is because they don’t like change, as the feedback for Emma has been overwhelmingly positive (more so than for Tess).

@ianbryan7976 2 days ago

Richard is a nice guy and I like him, but he and others are gutless to stand up to this censorship. He says when there is something important, then he will stand up for it, but my point is when something important is at risk and you have given away so much already, then you are no longer in a position of strength and you will lose what is important.

I think the BBC always have to think about how the daily mail will splash a front page headline about how terrible they are, and why the licence fee should be scrapped. So they are trying to defend themselves, even against petty complaints
