A leopard in a flimsy transport cage. What could possibly go wrong?

This week I’m reacting to another collection of incredible animal clips — including a leopard escape in Nepal, an orca apparently getting its attack slightly wrong, one of the strangest deep-sea squid on Earth, a crocodile stunt I absolutely would not recommend, dolphins stampeding off San Diego, a bone-eating vulture, a very confident gorilla and several snakes making questionable human decisions look even worse.

Along the way we’ll look at leopard behaviour, why horned baboon spiders may have those bizarre structures on their carapace, how mynah birds exploit human environments, the remarkable diet of bearded vultures, and what little we still know about Magnapinna squid.

What they didn't tell you is that it was actually one of the birds on the train making the announcement. And it announced the wrong stop. Deliberately. Local police refuse to take these menaces seriously, saying it was only a mynah offense.

I daw a video yesterday of a young seal jumping on a boat, he was being chased by orcas. The boat owner left in a hurray with it but the orcas followed, popping their heads up to see the seal. Eventually he handed the seal to an organisation where it joined other young seals. They were returned to the sea as adults. What an amazing experience for that man

One of my old lecturers was a qualified vet from India, wonderful person, he told us the story of how he'd been told he was going to see a man's cat about a tooth infection. He went in to his assessment room and this guy was sitting there with this rather tame leopard just happily lounging on the table. He told us he had to step back and ask the guy if it was safe, apparently the guy said 'oh yeah he's on a lead and he's good with vets'. Apparently it let him take the tooth right out and was very calm, but my lecturer said he never let that leopard see his back because they only need to see one vulnerability and they'll test it.

Also the gall of that spider and those kids with the snake, such care and gentility, rather heart warming.

My Brother lived in Zimbabwe many years ago doing research on the Tsetse Fly. Where they live in Kariba, they heard Leopards at night and they knew Leopards were about as they could hear dogs barking in the distance and they barking getting closer and the Leopards walked through the wooded area behind the houses. But in all the time he was in Zimbabwe, he never saw them. Though he did see Cheetah and Lions. Which in Africa, both are a lot rarer than the Leopard is.
As for sticking my head in any crocodilian, regardless of how well fed or "tame" the owner says it is, there is no way I'd stick my leg, foot, toes or arm hands or fingers, let alone my head, in its open mouth.
I would like to point out that it was actually the Mynah Bird doing the announcement on the train. 😅🤣😂 👍

That orca clip reminds me of one instance where an orca grabbed a seal pup and then returned to spit it out on the beach.

For those who don't know, the problem in Australia with Indian/common mynahs (which are completely different to our native honeyeaters called noisy miners) is that they have maximum invasive points. Intelligent and cooperative and competitive and adaptive, and, like other invasive species such as startling, they nest in hollows in trees which a) all our parrots/cockies and many other native species do and we have a lot of them and b) are an increasingly rare resource due to deforestation and also local councils going 'oh that looks dangerous we should get rid of that'. And, due to the aforementioned cooperation which they sometimes turn to mobbing behaviour, it's really easy for them to drive other birds out of nesting hollows.

Obviously no species of animal is actually evil but it's very hard for me to see Indian mynahs in australia and look on them with a friendly eye.

When I was in the U.S. Navy I saw a huge dolphin stampede as we were approaching The Strait of Gibraltar from the west. The dolphins were small and may have been the same kind in this video but there had to be thousands. This is from more than 50 years ago so don't quote me.

Any big cat can be a problem. They can be socialized, but they are a light switch.

Make no mistake, I once had to send three ambulances to a house where a house cat had gone berserk and injured five people! I dread to think what had caused that!

Ref the bearded vulture or lammergeier, whilst walking in the Pyrenees we were fortunate enough to see these rare birds. One time we were walking along a ridge or col, when one few overhead and passed over several times lower and lower. We felt it was seeing if one of us would fall! We survived, but it was awesome to see one so close. Usually you only catch a glimpse of their unique outline.
