It's NOT! This type of problem is getting more and more common on modern cars. Especially for the DIY mechanics out there.

This is my car! After the Wizard took care of me, the dealership charged $1,400 to change the BCM and $200 for a second key because they can't program a BCM without two keys. So glad the Wizard was able to diagnose this in one hour, as the dealership was going to charge 3 hours of diagnostics. With the Wizard's diagnosis all the dealership had to do was verify. After I picked my car up, the first words to my wife were "This is why the right to repair act is so important!" Looks like the Wizard is on the same page. Very thankful for the Wizard and his team!

This is not even planned obsolescence. This is outright theft.

Had this problem with a Volvo, I wired in a relay to the opposite working light bulb so it wouldn’t overload the circuit to the working side. This worked great and so far has lasted over two years. saved the owner hundreds of dollars replacing the body control module.

People need to realize a full resto will give you a much better car than spending 80-100k on a new one. The bank doesn't want to lend money out for this however.

I don't want to drive a computer. I want to drive a mechanical vehicle.

Car Wizard, you need to have a word with Louis Rossmann.

Bought a 2004 Miata as a toy about two years ago. It became my favorite car inside 30 days. Simple, easy to work on, plenty of parts, and none of this stupid BS manufacturers are doing today.

A lady at work asked me to change her headlight bulb. I opened the hood and could not find the socket. Five hundred dollars later the dealer took the whole bumper off to get to it.

Clippy wouldn't put a broken computer between you and a light bulb

@jvin248 11 months ago

15:44 "Everything is computer controlled" and yet they force the vehicle to play dumb and needs to go to the dealer.

You could remove the BCM, open it, and resolder the connection which is probably broken/failed inside of it... I did that for my 2000 Trans Am and got windows, a radio, and headlights back. Lol.

@matthews8576 11 months ago

Absolute bs the manufacturers are pulling. A tail light on a pickup goes out and disables the entire truck. A coworker had a newer Ford car that needed the entire facia to be removed to replace a headlight. Pure stupidity!

I spent most of an afternoon chasing down an inop license plate light. 2010 Jaguar X150. Did the usual bulb swap, checked voltages / grounds. Got low voltage at connector. More circuif tracing. Many posts on Jaguar Forums about a "hard reboot": remove both battery terminals, short the cables together for 45-or-so seconds.
And that was the fix.
Amazing - using a computer to run a bulb...shaking my head...
