Re-ringing is not some 2 hour job guys. Head has to come off. Lower end off. Crank out.
Are we reusing to old 150k mile timing chains? Rod bearings? Main bearings?
Head gasket set, head bolts, rings, and the many hours of labor.
Same price as replacing with a used engine. ZERO savings.

Toyota tech here. As a long shot. Take the plugs out. Fill cylinders with seafoam or Gm top end clean. Let sit for 30 minutes. Suck it out turn it over by hand a few times. Then crank it for a few minutes.

As long as the rings are just carbon stuck and not blown out I have had this bring 6-7 of these back from the dead. Def not a fix. But it bought the customer time with a working vehicle

This is why I call BS on 10k mile oil changes. DIY for 30-40 bucks every 4-5k miles beats $8k for a new engine.

You are a good guy.  My son had a Mazda 626 that we took to our mechanic.  Bad news.  We asked him what we owed him.  He said...,"I don't charge for last rites."

The way he looked at the jug of gas, I thought he was going to take a swig.

I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. With 320,000 miles handed down from family. Same issue with rings being carboned up. I pulled spark plugs, filled the cylinders with diesel fuel and transmission fluid, let soak for days. Did a oil and filter change once it mostly drained out of cylinders. Unplugged coils then turned over engine. Put sparkplugs back in and its been good to go. Have had to for 2 years with no issues. Restored compression. Gl everyone with this issue

Me and a Neighbor fixed his , drain the oil and install a new oil filter , Add Kerosene to the crankcase up to the full mark.
5 quarts , start the engine and let it Idle , do NOT drive it , and I mean DON'T drive it !!!
We Idle it for 30 mins , drain the crankcase and install a new oil filter .
We put Royal purple oil back in it , 20w-50wt.
The Kerosene was black , clean out all the carbon for sure , and IT WORKED !!!
You need to run thoses piston rings dry to clean out the carbon build up !!!
We took a compression after we did it and ALL the cylinders were 175PSI !!!
Two year later he sold the car !
Give it a TRY !

A good honest mechanic that has his customer's best interests in mind.  Gotta love this show.  Miss wizard makes the show so much the better.

I just don't understand why people don't do yearly oil changes at the price of totalling the engine

Just for grins and giggles,the easy way to confirm the loss of compression due to worn or stuck rings is a wet comp test with oil down the cylinder bores,and then compare the readings,

Tell him to look at a JDM engine (Japanese Domestic Motor), they only have 50,000 to 60,000 miles and are all compression checked.  I purchased one for my old 89 Supra, it was a 2.5 liter 1JZG Turbo and that was a nice engine, ran beautifully, cost right around $3500, they're a little higher now, but they're better then junk yard engines.

Not charging this customer, good on you wizard.  You have gone up in my estimation.

That's a very interesting video. It's almost unbelievable that a Toyota is DOA at 150k! I am glad I now know to never skip an oil change!

Same here - if I have catastrophically expensive news for a customer, I’ll give them the repair estimate (if they want one), but I won’t charge them for the diagnostics that got to that point. Just seems cold-hearted.

The attitude of:
'Oh, it's a Toyota. I don't need to do anything to it. Just gas & drive."
likely killed this Corolla.
Missed oil changes possibly made the weak piston ring situation even more susceptible to failure.
Lazy maintenance attitudes of 1st owners make buying a used Toyota very risky.

Sell the car to someone in South Florida where the weather is always hot!

I agree with adding transmission fluid with acetone in each cylinder, let sit for a week. Drain the oil, crank engine after a few days. Put new oil in. You’ll get a few more years out of it.
Ask me how I know…..it worked

be honest that it has problems and sell it in May.   16 years old, 156k - so it's really not worth that much.  
Do NOT skip the oil changes!   You are not saving any money by skipping the maintenance.
