The “slice of life” moments in this story adds something that others lack, allowing it to feel more surreal, more terrifying in a way.

This one is a truly sad story.
To imagine that two families got destroyed so wrongly just because the wrong person was at the wrong time and became obsessed with a young kid. To imagine that none of that would have happened if the teacher came up with a different activity or if the wind blew the ballons/letters in another direction.
It was just bad luck. Horrible luck.

I see why people say penpal and borrasca are 2 of the best creepy pastas. Not as scary as some but definitely the most memorable stories I've ever heard.

Penpal is unlike any other creepypasta, it has always stood out to me. The fact that this is a very real thing that can happen to anyone is what makes it truly terrifying, no supernatural, no beasts, just a very real monster. Great narration as always and props to the writer as well. Always looking forward to the next story!

That ending is the most f'ed up thing I've ever heard lmao. I can't believe a character with no dialogue can be so terrifying

Penpal is one of those stories that I listened to when I really got into creepypastas that showed how well written they can be. Penpal is also so tragic and sad but it's a great story. Thanks for keeping it alive!

This is still one of the most haunting stories. It's heartbreaking and nerve wracking and gut wrenching. You did this incredible story some serious justice, Ronnie

I came here to be scared and now my heart just hurts. You narrated this beautiful story so well and it felt like it came to life.
SPOILER

Poor Josh, poor Boxes, poor narrator, poor Veronica, their poor family. Everything is so heartbreaking.

Being in danger and feeling you did something wrong hits hard

My favorite narrator and my favorite creepy pasta? This is truly one of the greatest days of my entire life I’m so happy

My God...

This... this was gut wrenching. I've read this story before, so i know how it all connects, and that feeling of knowing how it all ends... knowing how the dots connect. AND STILL, it hit me like a ton of bricks as the ending comes around.Thank you for this reading, Dark Somnium. Truly.

The voice acting, background noise, it all helped in bringing this story to life. That these were real people, in a real world, making the pain of this story much more impactful. Can't even bring myself to call this a "story" anymore if i'm honest lmao.

OMG I JUST REALIZED if he could hear boxes over the walkie talkie, that meant someone had to hold down the button

This story and it’s ending have evoked more anger in me than any other; this stands out as I’ve never had this reaction before. For some reason I felt as though I was right there with Josh’s dad, like I was almost in his head and was feeling everything with him. Honestly I can’t completely explain the exact way I feel. This was a phenomenal story and narration, but I don’t think I can listen to this one again simply because of how it makes me feel. Shits got me wrapped up in my own head. Nevertheless, quality content as usual🫡

The endangerment of children brings me to such a violent and angry state of mind. Poor Josh..... 😢😢😢

Holy shit. This story was good. The way almost every chapter ended with a line that gave me an "Oh, shit..." feeling made it even better.

"This isn't how you spell my name. I didn't write this letter."

"I now know why I never saw her body brought out on a stretcher... The bags weren't filled with garbage..."

"See you again. Soon."

@steve94183 3 years ago (edited)

It's amazing this hasn't been made into a movie yet. Just the fact that it all feels so real is horrifying and the ending is absolutely gut wrenching. I could easily see someone like David Fincher or Matt Reeves taking a crack at it.

@twindrill2852 3 years ago

TBH that ending makes me wonder if the protagonist was better off NOT knowing what happened to Josh, since the revelation of his murder left him with massive guilt and a shattered worldview.
