This is not a console war thing, but more of where I'm at in life as a gamer. I love playing games on all platforms, but Nintendo has really captivated me and I want to explain how and why.
Incase people didn't know, Team Cherry is releasing Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight Silk Song as full games on physical cartridges for Switch 2 in October. Both games will come with instruction booklets and poster maps.
8:40 the thing that’s ridiculous about the game key card controversy, is that Nintendo was the first of the big companies to publicly disclose “hey, the game is not on the cart” for the Game Key Cards, but on PS4/5 & Xbox games have been not disclosing it for over a decade and faced little backlash
This switch 2 is so cool, I didn't have the original switch so having the switch 2 along with the WHOLE catalog of original switch games is awesome. It's becoming one of my favorite consoles. Being able to play big AAA titles on a handheld wherever is insane to me
I’m in the same boat as you. Started on Switch years ago, upgraded to PC for “serious gaming”, then started realizing I wanted to own my games and be able to use them offline indefinitely. Started GOG library but still wanted physical media and the elegant simplicity of a console experience. Bought a PS5, collected a lot of PS4 and PS5 discs, then this stupid Sony announcement hit. I actually wrote off Nintendo forever when they started suing emulator developers and attacking YouTubers.
But recently I started to understand why they do the things they do. They pay their employees well and maintain high morale, they don’t do mass layoffs, they try to prioritize ownership and physical media, they listen to customers and respond, they optimize the heck out of their games, they know who they are and don’t change. They know it’s hard to make great games and they try to ensure that remains possible for their teams. For them this was always about honor. They conduct themselves with what they view as honor, and that means caring for their employees, their customers, and their “IP.” In the past multiple times when things didn’t go well for the company, the top executives and board of directors took big pay cuts themselves to take responsibility and show leadership - they did not lay off even a single employee - something no big American corporate leaders would ever do! They value their workers.
I’m not a fan of Nintendo or any corporation. They aren’t our friends, they exist to take our money. But we do know who they are. And at this point, who Sony and Microsoft are is clear and it is ugly. Nintendo has also shown who they are, and while it’s not perfect by any means, it’s a whole heck of a lot better and more customer friendly than either of the other two, at least this generation.
My PS5 has become a dvd player after recent Sony announcements 👍 Plus I recently played through RE9 on my Switch 2 handheld mode and omg it was such a good experience, it gives me faith that ports could be decent going forward.
I Switched over to Nintendo and its been great. I realized i missed out on a lot of Wii, Gamecube, Wii U, DS and 3Ds games so i started collecting too. They had great games and systems all along. We just couldn't see.
Same tbh. I’ve never been specifically a Sony, Xbox, or PC guy, I’ve had em all. Whatever let’s me play the games I enjoy.
But given the prices in the industry, the going away of physical, the Switch 2 has been my main console. Was already transitioning more towards my OLED before upgrading to the 2.
Especially as a married guy with a kid and I’m my disabled mother’s caregiver, so I the Switch allows me to fit micro doses of gaming into my schedule rather than planning around it.
It’s not a perfect system, but it’s perfect for someone like me. If it were 15 years ago, I was single, and had no real responsibilities, it may be a different story. But right now, cozy and convenient gaming is where it’s at for me, and I can actually collect my games physically. It’s easier to play for a bit before bed too. No need to sit at a desk or at a set up. I can literally play laying down, then sit in my nightstand when I’m done. I’ve always had Nintendo handhelds of some kind, but have never been specifically a Nintendo fan. I’ve played the games with friends and stuff, but I really like the portability and convenience factor. Mt wife and I both have Switch Lites, OLEDS, I have the S2, and she’s decided to get one too after playing on mine for a bit.
When our daughter is a bit older, we’re going to give her one of our Lites and let her play things like Spyro, Kirby, and cute games like that. We’re not doing the whole smartphone/ipad kid thing. We have tons of arts and crafts supplies, books to no end, all kinds of music instruments and audio gear. Many hobbies for her to start with until she grows up and finds her own. Plus you can get all the accessories and customize the switch. Even as an adult, you get to feed that inner child with Nintendo stuff, even if I’m not a fan of many of their first party games myself. But since having the S2, I haven’t touched my PC or any other console. It makes gaming so easy and fun again.
I’m honestly looking forward to the new Castlevania’s and Bloodstained game coming out soon. October as a whole is gonna be a good month for the S2.
TBH, I don't like physical games/media because I have always lived in a small apartment and I do not have the real estate to have an immense shelf full of old consoles and game discs, much less for a dedicated man-cave/she-shed. However, I am totally against eliminating physical media because, like the Theonlykirby said, it takes away freedom of choice.
I'm in the same situation. I've had all the playstations, xboxs, nes, and switches. the original nes was my first ever console back when it came out when i was 10 years old. right now i have a PS5, PC, switch 2, and 2 switch oleds in my home. nintendo is just comforting and nostalgic and i always go back to it and feel like a kid again and that's fun with my kids. I'm probably gonna sell my ps5 and go all in on Nintendo again.
Been a switch 2 only player after the first week of owning it. Got a steam deck for anything that isn’t on switch, but otherwise it’s just the most seamless experience in the market that respects consumer ownership
The key card criticism is pointed mostly at Nintendo but three things aren't taken into consideration: 1. Other than Nintendo's first party games, it's not up to Nintendo whether a game is a key card or not. 2. Without key cards many larger games would be digital only or not on Switch 2 at all. 3. Unlike a digital only game which is linked to your console, with key cards the game is linked to the cartridge, so you can actually share and even resell it.
I bought a Switch 2, 4 months ago and I love it. And I recently bought a PS Portal(without a PS5) for streaming the games that arent on the switch and its the perfect set up.
Welcome! We play Mario Kart 8 the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month (World on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays), and on Holidays we open up our Animal Crossing Islands to guests.
