So I think it's fair to assume I DID NOT expect this video to get so many views, and so I kinda don't really know what to do beside say... thanks! Part of me got really nervous when I saw how many people were watching and commenting on this because I feel like I stepped into the boiling waters of The Discourse. All I really wanted was to have like 15 comments of people sharing their thoughts on the video and subject matter, replying to those, and having a fun little community. Obviously, 500 comments is more than that threshold, but I still thank everyone for the kind remarks and thoughtful replies.
I'd like to keep making more stuff when I have the time and ability to record, so hopefully some of y'all stick around. Some of you might have noticed that the other videos on this channel are VERY different than this, and I think they're worth checking out if you'd feeling curious.
If you're here though, welcome! I hope you enjoyed watching. (BTW, the music is the Cafe scene from Paper Mario: The Origami King)
I also think one of the best things about Nintendo is the variety. Most companies seem to publish games that are all similar to each other, whilst Nintendo has more franchises that always make a return. In one year Nintendo published more exclusives than sony in an entire generation, and honestly, those exclusives are also better games, even though they have lower budgets. Because it's not the budget of a game that makes it good: it's the ideas, the heart and soul poured into it by its devolopers, the creativity, the simple desire to create something fun. This is what is missing in most companies but can be seen with Nintendo and indie devolopers
Splatoon is getting a lot of attention. I mean A LOT. I’m not going to be surprised, that because of this attention, Splatoon 4 will be in production for a lot more and will be a very important game to Nintendo to release
I think that one point that gave them a huge advantage is how big indie titles have favored them. Toby fox is biased because he’s a huge Nintendo fan, but just last year we also got the first confirmations of silk song through Nintendo direct.
Indeed they are. Unlike Sony, they decided not every game needs a 100$ million + dollars budget, if you focus on something trivial for video games known as gameplay.
Nintendo's philosophy is that they don't need to "win" against Sony or Microsoft or anyone. As long as Nintendo's revenue outpaces their expenses they win. They don't need to make a viral live service game with 100 million players. They just need to make quality games that sell enough to pay the staff and then some.
Of course there is nothing wrong with Sony and Microsoft chasing some mega payday. But it's a high risk high reward business model, and when you take risks like that you can't cry when they don't work out.
One of the few things not a lot of people talk about Nintendo Is the fact that they embrace many of their comercial failures to this day, like they dont have to bring gamecube, Wii u or virtual boy's library nor keep small franchise but they still bring them in one way on another, xbox and Playstation practically dissapears anything thats not a multi million dollar franchise
Not just good games, Nintendo makes AAA and AA titles so their releases are consistent unlike with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo doesn’t just use contract workers they fire after the game is released and they fostered their younger talent.
Rhythm Heaven is one of those game series that always puts a big dumb smile on my face even at the absolute depths of my depression, Rhythm Heaven Fever on the Wii managed to make me feel some kind of happiness with the very first rhythm game, Hole in One and even fanmade spinoffs like Rhythm Carnival Scarlet still make me feel that same little happiness.
You also need to consider the Switch 1 came after a disastrous Wii U generation so they HAD to start strong to prove themselves, while here they don’t have that need and they can spend more time building up those larger games
The fact that recent announcements have been quiet compared to Switch 1 says to me that Nintendo are confident in their lineup and in the Switch 2 itself, and they don't mind making people wait if it means they might check out the great titles they do have like DK Bananza, Splatoon Raiders, Kirby Air Riders and Rythem Heaven.
Back in the Switch 1 days (especially the early Switch 1 days) they were constantly trying to wow us by showing off all the big things they had cooking up, even if those games wouldn't be ready for years. I think this time they're making an intentional effort to avoid that
This is one of the many reasons why I appreciate Nintendo so much more in this era where it feels like the entire gaming industry is on fire, they make fun video games. That is it.
Nintendo is casually surviving the gaming apocalypse
