Oh yeah, the 30 round mags that were developed for the M2 have a flat back on the feed ramp that holds the bolt open after the last round.

I own a dozen M-1 Carbines. Take the recoil spring and guide out FIRST, then the slide. Look in the slide for markings, and on the end of the bolts right lug.

My pops had trouble with that action too. I put it back together for him like butter! Lol beginners luck! That’s the only time I’ve fooled with one ever!

Well, I’m late to the party as this is about a year old video but here I am . I’d thought I had watched every M1 carbine video on YouTube but they always seem to pop up .
I have multiple M1 Garand’s and M1 carbines ( one being an M1a1 Paratrooper ) and though I love both there is just something about the Carbine that gives it the edge to me . Probably being light and handy .
As far as weight the Garand’s are 9.5 to 12 lbs depending on wood density and the Carbines are right at 5-1/2 lbs there about . I’ve got a few bayonets and stock pouches . I did put the UltiMak picatinny upper hand guard on a couple so I could mount a red dot which helps with my old eyes and can easily pick off small chunks of clay pigeons at 100 yards ( longest distance on the range I go to ) . I did take one to deer camp last year and the day I took it out I dropped a nice 8 point buck with one shot and it made that 200 plus pound buck so a complete flip in midair . I found a place that makes chest rigs specifically for M1 Carbines as well as stock and belt pouches for them . The chest rigs come in two styles , 6/15 round mags & 8/30 round mags and the prices are very near $50.00 !
You do have to purchase the waist belt separately but it’s $13.00 and change . The pouches have heavy duty Velcro instead of the snaps . The name is Olongapo Outfitters and they make chest rigs for other platforms like AK’s , AR15’s & AR-10’s shotguns and pistols and M1 Garand’s which has pouches for 12 EnBloc clips . I bought stock pouches for both a Garand’s and Carbines and the chest rig for the Garand’s and they are built well .
I’m waiting for the Carbine chest rig to be in stock in the color I want but I think it’s a one man shop so not always available. I just check back a couple times a week . Still waiting :( !
I worked at LCAAP ( Lake City Army Ammunition Plant ) and watched them demolish Bldg #4 where 30-06 & 30 carbine was produced . It hadn’t produced any ammo since the mid 80’s or so and was only used for storage . There was a section of the roof that had a huge crack and seemed unsafe and too costly to repair . A new plant is being built on the same sight for the new 6.8 that is to replace the 5.56x45mm . My son works there as well in 5.56x45 loading & Tip ID . Got great prices on ammo produced on plant at the twice a year employee sale !!!
Sadly no 39 carbine left sitting around ! lol I was hoping though .

Nice informative video. In regards to usage of this weapon during WWII I have noticed in watching a lot of actual footage from the Pacific theatre that you see a lot of the carbines being carried by front line troops in the island campaigns. Much more so than you do in Europe. It makes sense because obviously in jungle warfare close quarters combat would have been much more common. Also, the light weight of weapon and ammo must have been appealing to the US combatants in such a hot climate. In any case this weapon has an amazing history and was (and is) and outstanding firearm. Back in the 90's they could easily be acquired for something in the $300 range. They continue to increase in value and I haven't seen one at a gun show for anything under a grand in a long time now. Thanks for your post. [BTW, your description of the difficulty in fiddling with the parts during stripping is very accurate. They are a puzzle that is unforgiving in how you position the parts and even how you hold your mouth.]

I know im late to the party but im a new subscriber who recently inherited an M1 carbine.
I would love to see a vid on the bolt being broken down and also the history behind it. Thanks for the info. Did you wind up taking it hunting??
I've seen some with white paint on the butstock to number them in the armory.
