The US Civil War and then the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars, all within 10 years of one another from start to finish, really demonstrated how rapid mobilization and communications would become the standard.

Only 48yrs later some of those fighting at königgrätz would see a war of machines, rapid fire guns and airplanes. Madness!!!

Ironically, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, the French 1866 Chassepot rifle was considered to be superior to the Prussian 1848 Dreyse Needle Rifle in almost every way because it had a tighter seal on the chamber with the use of an India rubber o-ring which allowed for greater muzzle velocity and was generally better-designed. But despite whatever tactical advantages that may have yielded (longer-range infantry fire), the Prussians still won the war due to their strategic advantages of faster mobilization with rail to the front, organizational battle planning, and the Krupp Field Gun, which just pounded French artillery with impunity and dominated the battlefield.

So while I think the video is still correct that the Prussian Dreyse Needle Rifle offered a big advantage over the Austrians and their use of the Lorenz Muzzle-Loader in this particular war, other strategic factors can play a larger role in the outcome of a war than infantry small arms.

George V of Hanover was a cousin of Queen Victoria, and was only 3 days younger than her. His father Ernest Augustus was the fifth son of George III; the personal union between the UK and Hanover was broken due to Victoria succeeding the British throne in 1837, but Hanover barred female succession since they still practised Salic Law and so it went to Ernest Augustus.
After Prussia annexed Hanover, George spend the rest of his life advocating for the restoration of his kingdom. He even maintaining an irregular unit called the Guelphic Legion, at his own expense for another conflict with Prussia, but they sanctioned his remaining funds just before the Franco-Prussian War. He died in 1878 in Paris, his body was later moved to Windsor Castle.

Again I'm stuck studying for my university exams. I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, an integrated degree, and tomorrow is my Legal History exam.
And here I am, instead of studying the evolution of law, watching a military history documentary. 😂
