🧶 A year ago my mom told me how much she loved the color of one of my sweaters. I immediately bought a sweater quantity of Kelbourne Woolens' Perennial in the color Ultramarine and set it aside for a future project for her. Now the time has come to pick the pattern. I've had the Ranunculus in mind and I'd like to show her a few other patterns so that she is able to compare and contrast and make the best choice!

I think some people dislike a pattern just because it is popular. I think of them as knitting hipsters.

Happy birthday! I am a new knitter, I picked up needles for the first time 6 months ago. I am finishing my 3rd ranunculus right now. With the help of Sun Dragon tutorial videos this sweater was approachable for a straight up beginner. Each one I’ve done I have made different design choices for the neckline, the raglan increases, and the cast off. Currently I am finishing a long sleeve one. This pattern is amazing because it’s so adaptable. It is also beautiful to wear. I am not someone who wears overly feminine or flashy things and I love it. It makes a beautiful garment. I don’t think you can go wrong!

For me, it's simply a "dislike." People overuse the word "hate." Hate is a strong word for a strong emotion and it's just not that serious for me. I just don't like it. That's not "hate."

For those of you who hate the sound of crinkly bags: do you sew? If you sew, get some basic cotton, high thread count fabric and sew yourself a bag to put your yarn in, by project. Moths can’t get through high threadcount cotton. The bags don’t crinkle. You can choose to do drawstring closure or zip closure. They are reusable so you aren’t causing more waste by throwing away plastic bags. You can take empty cotton bags with you to the yarn store and put your purchases in them. And save your yarn store money on bags.
You can get the cotton fabric at the thrift store, good quality sheets, or pillow cases make a real good choice for this kind of project and saves money. Sometimes you can find quilting cotton at thrift store or in clearance aisles, and that works too, and comes in pretty prints. I really like thrifted pillowcases with pretty embroidery on them.

I'm with you on how patterns should have multiple pictures. The one thing that bothers me the most is how few patterns show the back of the neck. Not everyone has long hair! The most important feature to me for a top is whether my neck will be cold. I don't like wearing scarves, and wearing a cowl is just too much in the spring/summer. A mere 1 inch higher in the back of the neck is sometimes all it takes for a garment to work for me. If pattern makers showed the back of the neck, I could tell whether it's a pattern I want to buy. If they only have a long-haired model, the model could sweep their hair to the front for a photo. I'm not interested in whether the model looks glamorous, I want to know how the top functions when worn.

I watch another podcaster who has made the ranunculus several times, every one of them looks different (which is a good thing), different sleeves, different neckline, different yarns, you wouldn't even know they were the same sweater if she didn't tell you, which I think is a good thing.
She dresses very modestly so none of them are the very lacy, blocky, ethereal version.
It's a versatile pattern.
Everybody has their own opinion.

I've made 4 Ranunulus jumpers for myself. It's what got me back into knitting after not having picked up needles for around 50 years. It's a super fast knit and was a great learning experience for me to supercharge my progress as its great flexibility meant I was able to start freestyling with it even as an effective beginner. I agree with you that it's ludicrous to hate on a pattern and create drama around it - it's all individual taste at the end of the day. I used a YouTuber's KAL playlist (Sundragon Tips and Tricks) to get a hold of the yoke stitches. It wasn't difficult.
