You know movies like this will never happen again. The guy literally wanted to experience what it was like to go back through every life form that came before people & couldn't stop until someone pulled him out of it.
Saw this in the theater when I was fifteen. Years later, when I began experimenting with Psychedelics, I realized just how "experienced" the writer and producer and director must have been. There are parts of this that mimic a DMT (Dimethyltripymine) trip so closely. The film was so far ahead of its time, but I know few people these days who have actually seen it.
This film is a masterpiece, and THIS is the role that should have won William Hurt a much-deserved Oscar, as well as his outstanding supporting role in 'Dark City.'
This movie was a fun date night at the theater back in 1980. Think I will watch it again. Wow, his girlfriend rescued his cell and brought him back as a whole man!! Rest in Peace William Hurt.
Charles Haid in the x-ray lab speaking to George Gaynes about Hurt's neck: "Something looks a little unusual about the architecture around there." Gaynes (radiologist and speaking with a German accent): " A leetle? Your friend is a fucking gorilla!"
So not only was he giving off enough energy to glow from INSIDE the sensdep tank, but his awareness of the box's dimensions formed a portal in that shape to...somewhere.
