"I don't know how scientist and engineer differs" We see how! Grace is a scientist and Rocky is an engineer, Rocky sat for 40 years not making a breakthrough with the astrophage because he didn't have Eridian scientists for ideas, Grace could not have made the fishing device or breeder tanks without Rocky designing and making them. Another hail mary that they happened to find eachother.

“What’s he going to do now?” To quote the book, “I gave it a very scientific poke with a very scientific stick.”

He wasn't traveling faster than light. The trip is 4+ years just from his perspective, it takes 13+ years from Earth's perspective. He reached a speed of about 92% light speed so he experienced time dilation due to special relativity. By the time the probes returned to earth, about 27 years had passed since the Hail Mary had left Earth.

Rocky has an eidetic memory. He only needs to hear Grace say something in human English one time and he remembers. That’s why the laptop doesn’t need to also play back an English to Eridian translation for him. 😊

I don't know why, but the thing that makes me smile the most, in the beginning Grace teaches children sound waves, which we can't see. And in the end he asks the Eridians about the speed of light, which they can't see. Don't know if that was on purpose or coincidence, but I thought it's hilarious if they thought about that

Grace knew exactly where to find Rocky because he had calculated the route for him himself. Eridians didn't know about relativity, so they calculated their initial mission with classical mechanics formulas and messed up (which is why Rocky had waaay too much fuel and was able to share with the Hail Mary). For the return trip, Grace helped him with the math. The only problem was, Grace didn't know exactly when Rocky's engines would cut off, so he still had to do some fishing.
I really love the idea that the aliens are neither way more advanced nor more primitive than humans; rather, we have more knowledge in some areas, and they in other areas, and collaboration is beneficial for everyone. Grace gave Rocky a laptop with all human knowledge, and Rocky gave him xenonite to send to Earth.

Fuel isn't the problem: Grace doesn't have enough food left to give Rocky a ride to Erid and then go home. Even if the Eridians gave him enough astrophage to go home to Earth, he'd starve to death just a few months into a years-long trip. So by saving Rocky, he's choosing to go on what is (as far as he knows) a suicide mission — the very thing we saw him try so desperately to get out of just a few scenes before.

Of course, as we see, the Eridians have clearly figured out how to make food he can eat along with building him his little habitat, so then the only question left is will he ever want to go home?

I always forget how smart yall are lol, as a bio major now this movie was even more amazing then when i read it years ago in high school

32:43 astronauts were on set when they were doing some of the 0g. Ryan was worried that he was overdoing it, looking like an idiot, but the astronauts confirmed that is exactly what it is like when you are first getting used to 0g. 😄

I love how into the science you guys were. The book goes really deep into how everything happens and you can see Grace do so many calculations to figure everything out, if you are curious on how anything happens I would recommend 1000% the book and specially the audiobook by Ray Porter. It’s a top 10 book for me. Great reaction and I can say we were all crying during this movie 😂

39:25 if you'll notice here rocky creates a wall of various thickness and materials to test what grace would need (very smart!), which is why the next time you see the wall it's all transparent.

The set designer’s blueprints for the ship called the Mental Health Hub the “Don’t Go Crazy Room.”

51:27 rocky's species' brain is like a super computer so Grace doesn't have to translate the words he's saying to the song language cause Rocky remembers every sounds Grace makes

Rocky saved Grace because he knew Grace would be able to figure out how to save their planets. Rocky is very smart but a better engineer than a scientist

So in the next 30 years, what's going to happen to earth is going to happen. The goal of Project Hail Mary, was never to stop the star from dimming (not the primary goal anyway). The goal was to make sure the earth didn't have a perpetual ice age. Unlike how humans usually are only capable of thinking and planning a decade ahead, in this scenario, humans knew they were fked and stoically came together under Ava Stratt, knowing what they were doing will only borne fruit for future generations. I found this aspect of the story awesome. It shows that humans can come together and be more selfless if we have a common threat.

you guys are genuinely so smart. this was an absolute joy to watch!

You guys should absolutely read the book, soooo many of your questions are exhaustively covered in it. The audiobook had me literally laughing, cheering and crying in my commute when i listened to it.

The sad thing is that I can’t blame both Stratt and Grace for what happened in the last flashback. Grace really doesn’t want to go because he doesn’t want to die. That’s quite selfish in a way, but also very realistic. I can’t blame him for reacting that way. But I also can’t blame Stratt for forcing him into it. You can tell she absolutely hates having to do that, but she has to. Grace is the only person in the crew who can do this mission. The book goes into more details on why he is the only option. But he really is their only hope. I recommend you guys read the book, it’s really good.

I love that u guys not only just react to a movie but u put a lot of thoughts into analyzing the story, the details, and the science theories too. That’s why Ive been waiting for your vid on this movie. Thank you and hope u guys have a great one!
