My grandmother lived on Beach 96th Street and we used to hang out in her bedroom watching the rollercoaster. We were too young to go. Robert Moses died before he did anything much about the highway and as long as I can remember, the area knocked down was a badlands for most of my life. My uncle, who was a NYC cop, warned us to be careful driving from one relatives home in Belle Harbor to his house in the opposite end of the peninsula. As for the reason Robert Moses focused on the Rockaway area because of the minority population. He was known to target such areas. He went after the Upper West Side to build Lincoln Center. Until he ran into my Aunt Sarah, who refused to move out of her home and he was forced to scale down the project.

My family went there every year in the 50s thru 70s during the summer. I remember they shot fireworks off a barge in the ocean on Rockaway beach every Wednesday.

My parents hung out at Playland back in the 50's, then in the 60's they took us kids there for family outings. We moved to Florida in 1970, but I never forgot Playland.
Well, I never knew there were 2 Playlands. We went to one in Rye New York. Learn something new every day.

Beach 9th street was the beginning of Nassau County that is the reason the boardwalk never continued to 1st street cause the county line was9th street as we were told by both NYPD and the Nassau County cops

Used to love going to Playland and then Bogianos for clams after when I lived in the Rockaways in the 80's. The Homes built on the Old Playland property look like Shit now....Residents haven't kept up with the upkeep or the cleanliness! No surprise there considering what moved in there.....The Rockaways Hey-Days are LONG GONE and so are Most of the people I grew up with there back in the 80's. We left and never looked back.....too Sad to see what it's become.
