ЧВП — это особый тип движителя для быстроходных судов, у которого в рабочем режиме (на глиссировании) в воде находится только 40–60% диаметра диска винта, а остальная часть вращается в воздухе. Обычный погружной винт на высоких скоростях (более 60–70 км/ч) сталкивается с вредным явлением — кавитацией (закипанием воды на лопастях от падения давления), что разрушает металл и снижает КПД.
суперкавитирующий (клиновидный) профиль лопастей. При входе лопасти в воду на ней образуется контролируемая каверна, которая завязана на атмосферный воздух, что полностью снимает проблему гидродинамического разрушения лопастей и резко увеличивает скорость.
Поскольку удары лопастей о воду колоссальны, обычный алюминий здесь не живет. Винты ЧВП изготавливают из высокопрочной нержавеющей стали (например, марки 17-4-PH) или специальной морской бронзы («нибрал»). Они имеют острые, как бритва, входящие кромки и тупые исходящие (клиновидный профиль)
Тяжелый выход на глиссирование: На малых скоростях винт сильно «вентилирует» (хватает воздух), катер долго разгоняется. Сложность конструкции: Требуются специальные регулируемые колонки (например, привод Арнесона — Arneson Surface Drive).
Высокий КПД на больших скоростях: Отсутствует кавитационное торможение, прирост скорости может составлять до 30–40%
