This video is a vocal coach analysis of Sonu Nigam’s iconic MTV Unplugged performance. Despite being one of the most versatile and celebrated singers in India, this was my first time hearing him, and I immediately understood why this performance is so loved.

In this reaction, I explore how Indian classical ragas interact with Western harmony, creating that beautiful sense of tension and release between the voice and piano. We look at micro-intervals, fluid ornamentation, dynamic control, and how Sonu Nigam balances technical mastery with deep emotional expression. This performance is a perfect example of structure and freedom coexisting. Calm, expressive, intricate, and incredibly human.

Arijit Singh once said in an interview, "Sonu Nigam is the only singer who can't sing bad even if he tried" (translated)

Imagine someone who does not understand the language cried just listening to the 1st bit of the song shows music has no barriers.

@rishikpandey2057 9 months ago

Trust me you would've cried harder if you were known to the lyrics !!!

I'm not indian but i used to tell my childhood friends that this guy was underrated for me he's even better than udit narayan and kumar

We had college alumni party last year, and he was invited for a concert. I was at 5 meter distance from him. He sounds exactly the same in live just like the recorded voice. He is just something else.

The NOTES between the NOTES are known as SHRUTI in Indian classical music

This lady is so great, she understands music so much good

@ArunMLimbu 5 months ago

the fact that she doesn't understand the lyrics but still gets the emotion of the song proves Sonu's mastery.

This woman has lived music all her life, else its not possible to express the way she did.

I didn't know India had different scales. That's interesting.

Sonu is the personification of a well tuned saxaphone and basuri while shreya is the personification of indian violin and classical flute.

Sonu Nigam is a living legend of India.

At 9:59 Roothe bachhe ki hansi jaise fuslane se fir se khil gayi. Look at her reaction..Her inner child comes forth without even understanding the lyrics, which literally translates into a child smiling. This is the power of music backed by a singer who is probably one of its kind in the whole wide world

@sriniko6072 9 months ago

Sonu Nigam is an iconic singer, only he can match his class in Indian music.

If you are wondering what's the lyrics of this song..

Still, somewhere inside me,
there is a little life remaining..
A new heartbeat came up,
I got to know that I am still alive..
Some such tenacity
is there in this moment,
where was this moment of mine..
now it's in front of me,
should I die or should I live a little..
should I kiss joys,
or should I cry a little,
should I die or live for a while..

(as if) the body burning down in the sun
got the shade of a tree,
like the smile of an angry kid
came back on a little cajoling..
something like that is what my heart is feeling now,
on the years old wounds, there is some balm applied
some such mercy is there in this moment,
where was this moment of mine..
now it's in front of me,
should I die or should I live a little..
should I kiss joys,
or should I cry a little,
should I die or live for a while..

like a kite with broken string
was this life of mine,
today I'm there, whether tomorrow takes place (for me) or not (is not known),
was my story everyday.. (he was unsure of how long he'd live)
now a new bond calls me from behind,
why does a worry for tomorrow trouble me,
such a prickle is there in this moment,
where was this moment of mine..
now it's in front of me,
should I die or should I live a little..
should I kiss joys,
or should I cry a little,
should I die or live for a while..

The story behind the recording of the original song was that Sonu Nighams mother was going through Cancer before her demise. He really whacked it out the park!
