I love how Eeyore by Slipknot is about a guy being a douchebag in a mosh pit

Growing up and even now as an adult, I’ve probably heard Metal being blasted out of someone’s car maybe 2-3 times. I’ve been WAY more exposed to secondhand Rap than anything else

Great points all around. I'm the guy who goes to shows with a bag of earplugs in his pockets and offers them to everyone. Ofc, I didn't start wearing them until I noticed my hearing wasnt as good as it used to be, but I'd like to prevent further damage and save those who still have good hearing.

One that gets me is when fellow “metal heads” try to discount other metal heads for also liking other genres of music.

To be fair...there are people blasting all kinds of music genres with their windows down.

I'm a woman, I get the "Name 3 songs!" I've been listening to metal since birth basically and started to go to concerts and festivals since 1986... I made an intentionally tacky/'80s flashy looking battle jacket with puffed sleeves and a LOT of Glam-/Hair metal patches on it. I found that fun and fitting, because that genre is so over the top too.
...but yeah, I get a LOOOT of comments online about it being a "poser jacket", an "Amazon jacket" etc... Which really sucks because I actually saw all of them live, and bought the patches at festivals. Where the vendors sourced the patches is not my problem. Also it has at least 5 one of a kind patches I had custom made because I couldn't find patches of those bands. I also customized some patches by painting them etc. It took me 35 years to collect the patches, and then 4 months to actually  make. But I guess that's the internet for ya.

First time I was in a mosh pit was an accident. I was 135 pounds and was knocked around like a pinball. I almost fell down but three or four arms immediately caught me likely without much thought on the part of the moshers. That was very eye opening for me.

Regarding the mosh pit unwritten rules, I've always been impressed by how orderly people can be during these regardless of the country you are in, about 12 years ago I was at a Morbid Angel mosh pit in Germany, my glasses fell out of my head and everyone just stopped to search for them, I got them back completely undamaged! Then a few years later in Mexico my brother went through the same thing, he lost his glasses in the mosh pit, everyone stopped again to search for them and got them back undamaged, what's even funnier about this second occasion was that my brother actually found the glasses from another guy and somebody else found his glasses, so they just swapped and the mosh pit restarted. That goes to show the civility and respect of the average metalhead.

Okay I'm gonna nerd out and tell you about the punk rock phenomena of "slam dancing" which predates mosh pits from back in the 70s.

The need for hearing protection cannot be stressed enough. It's not tough to not wear them. Imagine a construction worker not wearing protection because they wanted to look tough. Even the bands up on stage  almost always wear hearing protection. And once you've damaged your hearing, that's it. That ringing that eventually fades away. That's your brain tuning out a frequency you will never hear properly again.

People most definitely use music as a proxy for being tough! It’s wild to see.

Honestly I may be guilty to having too loud music in my car. I dont really drive with my windows open but some tracks can be heard through clearly. I have tested it myself but I cant bring myself to play good music with low volume when Im alone lol.

Metal music is very passionate. Its infectious and the bond we share is passionate. So go metal!

It can be fun to talk obscure metal (or even rock) trivia with your friends, but if you are doing it to try to impress people or play the "gotcha game", then it's pretty annoying.
