What would happen if you read an ad in a newspaper for your dream partner. They’re rich, they’re beautiful and they are looking for someone to share their life with. Would you answer, or is that too good to be true? Well, in 1906, dozens of men around the country had that exact problem, except when they answered these ads and went to go meet their future wife, they vanished without a trace.

The ultimate question: Do you believe Belle Gunness died in the fire, or did she orchestrate a brilliant escape, leaving a decoy in her place? Share your theory

@analuna2543 11 months ago

DEFINITELY faked her own death, and made off with what money she could.

@haileybalmer9722 11 months ago

They also could not find her feet. This is extremely interesting, because she was widely known for her disproportionately small feet. It was one of the first things people noticed about her. So she’s supposedly dead in the basement, missing any identifying characteristics and quite a bit too small to be Belle. You’re darn tootin’ I don’t think she died in the fire. I think it’s very likely she went back to Europe the same week as the fire.

35:25 Ah yes, the teacher is concerned about the girls crying because their mother beat them at home, so she sends them… home, early. Of course!

Didn't the professor come with his wife? Are we just going to assume that she only killed her daughter that Christmas night because knowing its just a random headless female corpse, she already beheads them as an M.O., and she burned the place down so no one would probably recognize her. Do we know if the professor and his wife made it back to LA??

Jenny was def unalived by this terrible woman. She didn't even love the children she yearned for so much, thank god that one toddler was saved and what a shame Jenny's mother was too ill to protect her.

See, here's the thing. If a person managed to get away with 28killings, that person is well capable of staging a get away plan. People like this are smart and intelligent in terms of planning. Not only how to commit the crime, also thinking beyond after the crime. To stage self disappearance is easier then to cover up others. I have no doubt that it was not her in that rumbles.

I believe she did escape and orchestrated her decoy

Really liked the way Kaelyn tied together the story with Siren mythology. Very entertaining episode.

@Shelbybriana96 11 months ago

Yep, she definitely faked her death. Since she killed her oldest she wouldn't care that she killed the rest.

Dang that's old old school catfishin.

@ughhumans 11 months ago

I know she was rolling her eyes reading their letters 😂

The siren connection was interesting, not something I would have thought of on my own. Glad that their origins as bird women rather than mermaids was highlighted.

I’m wondering what made Jennys mother fall “ill” 🤔

This was absolutely horrific to listen to and creepy as all hell. Im surprised ive never heard of this story though, and it does remind me of the pig farm murders in Canada that were orchestrated by Robert William Pickton. That first person stayed longer than I would have; regardless of sleepiness, seeing those graves, the person you corresponded w/ looks nothing like the person you believed and the farm itself is in a dilapidated state, id have bounced pronto.

Yeah she didn't die in the fire. She didn't chop off her own head. She didn't move her head to another location. She DID have access to bodies in various amounts of dismemberment. Nope she fled and burned everything and everyone in her wake. I just feel awful for all of the children over the years. She must've been a sociopath.
