Ellen Greenberg: The Case So Twisted It Broke the Internet

Clues with Kaelyn Moore

201,139 views

In 2011, 27-year-old teacher Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment with multiple stab wounds, including wounds to her back, and a knife still lodged in her chest. Despite visible injuries, conflicting forensic evidence, and questions surrounding the crime scene, her death was ruled a suicide. In this episode, Morgan and Kaelyn break down the full timeline of Ellen Greenberg's case, including the initial investigation, autopsy findings, and medical examiner conclusions that have been widely disputed. They also examine the inconsistencies that continue to raise questions and the years-long fight by Ellen’s parents to have her manner of death reconsidered as a homicide. This is a case that sits at the center of an ongoing debate about forensic evidence, investigative decision-making, and how deaths are classified.

After walking through the timeline of Ellen Greenberg’s case, what moment do you think mattered most? 👇

@stephaniewilt7214 7 months ago

To think that this case was a suicide is absolutely absurd.

@bella-z 7 months ago

I can’t think of a more incriminating thing to say in a 911 call than “she fell on a knife”

@MandieJoMiller 7 months ago

I’m not confused at all. IMO, there is NO WAY she did that to herself. Zero.

@pinkclouds.98 7 months ago

A man who, instead of being worried about his future wife not answering the phone, threw a hissy fit and claimed she fell on top of a knife - this case has me in shambles. Unbelievable.

@taryltaryl 7 months ago

even with hesitation marks, google searches, and visits to a psychologist, nothing negates the fact that she would have been paralyzed and unable to inflict subsequent wounds. I find suicide highly implausible.

@emrisdarkwizard 7 months ago

The way the man in the start is talking in that phone call- he sounds like he's auditioning for a drama class and BOTCHING it. He is a horrible actor. There is no genuine emotion in that mfing voice.

She absolutely did not unalive herself. Anyone who thinks that the is delusional!!

How is a woman gonna be found slumped over with 20 stab wounds and the cops are immediately like, “this was a suicide” 🙄🙄🙄🙄 WTFFFF… And what kinda investigators are gonna believe someone when they say, “oh, she fell on a knife.” Anyone with a brain can see that this was a murder. She was stabbed in the BACK and NECK! Come on

@TailgateJuli3t 7 months ago

Hear me out - he killed her, left to give himself an alibi by being seen around the building and then was shocked when he came back and the door was locked, not realizing it had happens by accident… so he actually thought she was still alive while he was trying to get in and was texting her.

@Awkwardmommy 7 months ago

I had a roommates ex attempt to kick in our door with that exact type of lock and the entire frame of the door was pushed in a few centimeters. The drywall around the doorframe was visibly cracked. Luckily I threatened to call the cops and he stopped and drove off. All that to say that is not how it would break.

I think it was Sam. I think he lost his temper, killed her, cleaned up and went to the gym (making sure to slam the door to activate the indoor lock), then when coming home he makes sure to text her like he normally would. Unsure of what to do next, he called his lawyer family members, and they tell him to make a big scene of the door being locked from the inside, making sure to contact the building manager who can then vouch for this, and be his alibi.

He did not sound genuinely concerned in the 911 call, and he made a point of mentioning that she would be likely to do something like this to herself, planting another seed of him being innocent. The fact that the lawyer family members immediately drove down to his place after their call is also very telling. I think these family members were hoping that it would look like suicide, so that they could then pull the "we need to get some stuff for the funeral from the place" and end up getting all evidence removed. To be safe, they tamper with the electronics to plant further seeds of Ellen having been suicidal.

You also mention in the video that Sam is from a very rich and influential family. I think that also has something to do with why Sam was deemed innocent, and Ellen's cause of death was deemed as suicide so quickly.

If you treat it like murder until the autopsy is done, you don't hold the crime scene for months, you collect the evidence the way you would if a crime has been committed. You release it after a day or two with all the evidence collected, and that is also standard practice if I understand correctly 😊

I watched this case on a different channel recently and I'll repeat what i said then, the husband 💯% did it & he had help & connections to cover it up. 1) hes a GIGANTIC narcissist whos perfected DARVO 2) he actually refused to do & didnt do, despite acting like he did, CPR or any attempts at life saving 3) the cops fully f'in screwed up here & it is a case just riddled with botches like a feral cat with fleas because, as a nurse & Biologist who's absolutely obsessed with true crime & has a functioning brain, unlike others in this case, ther is NO WAY these injuries are self inflicted!

@tloo5649 7 months ago

20 stab wounds? 1 stab wound would be to painful to keep going on.

@Jamielc23 7 months ago

That 911 call is some of the worst acting ive ever heard…

@theknight3583 7 months ago

This is one of the most if not the most botched case you've ever coverd

@peppermintcutie5327 7 months ago

If she wanted to kill herself she had multiple different drugs to do the trick, I doubt she would have stabbed herself twenty times.

@sarahhenning5484 7 months ago

Tallies on the botched board somehow don't seem like an accurate representation of how badly this case was handled. This is so engaging. The whole PD should be replaced and everyone involved in this case who seems not to care at all.

There was still so much that could be done, like reenact the door being kicked down, the stab wounds angle relative to the length of her arm just to name the first ones that come to mind.

Who decided that the security guy was there when the door was kicked down but conveniently didn’t see the body or wasn’t present at the 911 call...

Morgan, I have to tell you I love the way that not only are you not afraid to admit when you don't know something, you are curious and look for the answer.
I thought her fiancé was a sportscaster. He also had a forensic science degree? An MD?? No? Then how was he able to diagnose her then? Stabbing oneself in the chest, is an extremely odd way to self checkout. Especially for a female with a drawerful of benzos.
