Synopsis: Because Obsidian is just a name, and all the devs of the OG Fallouts are gone.

"FROM THE STUDIO THAT BROUGHT YOU (a bunch of games that came out 20 years ago where almost none of the original developers are still at the studio)"

That rant about treating companies as an unchanging monolith is the reason why Destiny was able to get away with a lot of modern gaming's sins and it took over a decade for even die-hard fans to wake up and face the music. The people who made the original Halo Trilogy are long gone and we shouldn't let nostalgia be a barometer for how well a studio will inherently be, for both the better and worse.

aged like wine.

I am watching this video already knowing that the old Obsidian doesn't exist anymore and that if Obsidian made a fallout game today it would be fallout's version of Avowed

I dont want a fallout game from obsidian
I want a Fallout game written by Chris Avellone

I can boil it down to one point and sentence. The Obsidian of today is not the Black Isle of yesteryear.

As a former Obsidian cultist I must say amen to this.

Another thing that isn't really mentioned as far as background on the why of things is that the Fallout IP wasn't in a good place at the time it was sold either, having released Tactics in 2001 (which while not a flop had apparently underperformed) and just released Brotherhood of Steel in 2004 (which was an outright failure to such an extent, none of the devs, new or old, consider it canon even in broad strokes,) and the two companies gunning for it the hardest when it was put up were Troika and Bethesda.

Troika - the then-home of many of 1 and 2's developers - was basically bleeding like a stuck pig due to VTM:Bloodlines' commercial failure (like it or not, it failed financially at the time even if it's become well-regarded two decades on from release) and they supposedly had to go to BioWare to even have a shot at getting the IP. They were in bad shape and from what I've gathered, it wasn't a secret they were hurting financially, though nobody knew it was as bad as it was until they closed their doors in late 2004 and officially shuttered not long after.

Bethesda meanwhile had just come off the commercial and critical success of Morrowind and had plenty of experience with RPGs, with another already in the pipe. They were flush with cash in relative terms, had a solid crew, had recent commercial success, and were actively working on more stuff. By comparison they were in infinitely better shape than Troika was.

To Interplay it was likely a no-brainer to sell to Bethesda. They were just the better option no matter how much many wish otherwise, and Troika being dead before spring of 2005 shows they were right to do so.

While some of Troika went on to form Obsidian, they still lost people to other companies and the ebb and flow of the industry. It was sheer stupid luck that the original project leads for 1 and 2 happened to be available at the time they were and it's highly likely they'll never all be able to work together on something again unless they go out of their way to do so.

It's like thinking Sucker Punch is still full of the people who made the Sly Cooper trilogy. Twenty years after the fact, barely if any of them are still there.

Frankly I don’t care who makes it anymore, I just want A fallout game. A real one. It’s been 10 years

I haven't watched it but i already agree! Games are made by PEOPLE and not the name of a company, just because they did it good a thousand years ago doesn't mean they'll do it again cause remember, "Obsidian" represents an ever changing cast of employees, not the same  individuals who made the game years ago...

Tbf I think when people say they want Obsidian to make Fallout games they mean the New Vegas team.

It's like lighting in a bottle. No company can develop a winning formula but it doesn't stop fanboys worshiping them

I think that Star Wars and Fallout are very similar in that they were both bought up by massive studios, and a lot of original fans felt disappointed by what the new owners have done. So it’s interesting to me that Obsidian worked on both IPs in a similar context.

after seeing the disaster known as avowed, I don't want obshitian to touch fallout ever again.

11:14 I’m going to have to fact check that. Tim Cain has said multiple times that he was never the narrative plot lead on the team and the overwhelming narrative writing work went to Leonard Boyarski(who came up with the 50s influenced aesthetic, pitched the post apocalyptic setting, and came up with the mutants look) and Jason Anderson. Outer worlds wasn’t Leonard’s fault; based on hints from Tim Cain himself, it was mostly studio drama and not having a proper team

I never understood everyone's uncritical praise for Obsidian to begin with. At best they were an average studio, who frequently released broken and incomplete games, and somehow it was always someone else's fault. "Muh 18 months."

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the true Magnum Opus of Obsidian, the culmination of all their decisions, Avowed

Fun fact: Tim Cain loved Fallout 3 (and Bethesda games in general). He has a video in his channel talking about it called "Let's talk fallout 1". Chris Avelone also really enjoyed Fallout 3 saying at the time "One of my most recent favorite RPG in terms of design principles was Fallout 3".
