If you live somewhere with cold winters, now is the time to get your garlic planted! 🧄🌱
And the best part? You don’t need a big garden, a greenhouse or even a proper garden bed to grow your own garlic. In this video we’re planting garlic in containers, buckets and even window boxes — proving once again that you can grow a surprising amount of food in a very small space.
Garlic is one of those wonderfully easy crops that really doesn’t ask for much. Pop the cloves into some decent compost, give them a sunny spot and let winter do its thing. Garlic actually likes a period of cold, which helps it develop those lovely bulbs for harvesting next year. It’s also wonderfully winter hardy, making it a brilliant crop for colder climates.
Whether you have a tiny garden, a backyard, a patio, or you're growing vegetables on a balcony, there’s a way to fit garlic in. And once you get it planted, there really isn’t much to do while it quietly gets on with growing through the winter.
There’s another very good reason to grow your own: saving money. A few cloves can turn into a whole harvest, giving you homegrown garlic to use in the kitchen for months. And knowing exactly where your food came from is pretty satisfying too.
Garlic also has a long history as both a food and a traditional medicinal plant, and it contains compounds such as allicin that are associated with a range of potential health benefits. So this little crop can tick a lot of boxes — easy to grow, useful in the kitchen, potentially good for you and kinder to the grocery budget.
So if you’ve been thinking about growing your own food but don't have much space, give garlic a go. Containers, pots, buckets and window boxes all count!
🌱 Grow food. Use the space you have. Save a little money. And enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your own garlic.

As a result of great information coming in from one of our gardening pack, I've just checked and currently much of Tesco's garlic is sourced from China and although tasty, they do use many types of sprouting inhibitors that sometimes can effect how well the bulb may grow. HOWEVER.....The organic pack of garlic for only £1 a pack in Sainsbury's, is grown in Spain and to a much higher 'organic' standard.
