System Shock Remake Review

The System Shock remake finally released in 2023 after nearly a decade of development at Nightdive Studios and then got a large patch in the middle of me making this. It's supposedly so much like the original some players think it's too much like the original. But did they actually play the 1994 game? Either way SHODAN is back. Please clap.

System Shock Remake on GOG - https://gog.la/SystemShock23
Video ended up quite a bit longer than what I thought it would, but I'm sure anything for 2 Double Deluxe edition in the future shouldn't creep up that hard.

Director of System Shock Remake here - this is how you get an RBG dishwasher in our next game. Also, I love the Nightdive skulls in your thumbnail ❤

"I had a nightmare where LinusTechTips turned my apartment dishwasher RBG and shoved me inside it."
Those are some oddly specific nightmares, Sir Druid Knight of Limbo.

There's a slightly hidden bit to Diego's character. If you listen carefully to his combat barks, they change noticeably with each of his 'upgrades'. Notably, they go from condescending laughter to begging for death by the end. Hits with one of the ironic bits of SHODAN's characterization, that failure and success are punished/rewarded with the same thing: transformation to a more 'perfect' form that leaves the subject in perpetual suffering.

Some of the quotes: (on hit) "Finish the job!", "I will take you down with me!", (idle) "Die...! Let me die!", "Please, goddess - end this!", etc.

Mandalore’s obsession with The Whale never ceases to send me reeling.

The best part of System Shock Remake is that in this day and age they somehow managed to condense it to just under 8 gigs. my ssd is grateful for this boon

System Shock 1's UI looking like a dialysis machine is one of those things that still makes me giggle randomly all these years later

I love how shodan frequently sounds like she has a chorus of little versions of herself echoing her like devout worshippers.

The insane multiple-entendre Lion King reference starting around 27:00 is an example of the kind of writing that makes you special.

25:15 "Holy shit, the hacker and Shodan are fighting over the aux chord" is a wonderful line and a damn near whimsical design philosophy.

1:47 = Sadly, I misheard this as "parody patch" at first, and now I wish EVERY game had one of those...

The Linus nightmare finally breaches containment and enters canon on the main channel.

I do hope the developers can get the time they need to bring those Giger walls back, at least as an option, I can't imagine those were an easy exclusion for such an otherwise tonally faithful remake

Addendum;

fixed the typo a few replies pointed out, no you're not suddenly interesting or clever for pointing out the original still exists, no you're not suddenly clever or interesting for being a dipshit about the devs or about the remake's existence in general, you can check FOR YOURSELVES in this very comment section that a developer has stated the reason the walls were different is time crunch

I genuinely miss the old radioactive sound. I have never been as motivated to mvoe through an area as quickly as possible while that sound was destroying my eardrums.
