While modern dramas like Empress of China and modern games like Road to Empress portray Princess Gaoyang as a tragic rebel and a close ally of Wu Zetian, the real historical records suggest a different story. According to the New Book of Tang, she had a scandalous affair with the monk Biànjī, a relationship that supposedly ended in tragedy. But was it real? Let's go through Chinese history, examine the conflicting evidence, from imperial household grants to missing records, to discover how a favored princess became entangled in a treasonous plot that forever changed the fate of the Tang Dynasty.

Men want to accuse happy and wealthy women of everything but they won't record the women's actual NAMES.

Really appreciate the research you do. You don't just retell popular narratives about these figures, but examine primary sources, find discrepancies, pose interesting theories, and reflect on how popular depictions of these characters are actually saying something about us in the present. Lots of respect!

I feel bad for every servant in the princess's household. Hopefully, the story was fabricated.

I saw some gamers trying to play Road to the Empress and omfg 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they kept dying because of EVERYTHING. Wore a red dress? Die. Be nice to someone. Die. Ignore someone. Die. 🤣 Those playthroughs are hilarious.

After playing Road to Empress I was so hoping you would do a video about Princess Gaoyang 😭 Thank you, Amy!! ♥️♥️♥️

Honestly, that smear campaign made her sound like an absolute badass hero. I can't imagine anyone not being on her side.

Why do I feel like she was used😢. Being spoiled & willful was her biggest strength & biggest weakness. So she was the best target/chess piece to use in the fight for power. She might not be necessary bad or good but sadly she was being used. Even if she was evil she was never the player but the chess piece.

I really like how you point out historical inaccuracies in media but don’t exactly shame them for it? Like most stories are going to have more drama and intrigue just to make it more interesting, or fudge details a little, but so many people either have a “I don’t care about the history” or a “100% history or bust” mindset.

I think it’s important to tell the real history, but also acknowledge that these parts are ignored or changed for the sake of a story and not necessarily for historical accuracy because it’s just more engaging. It’s why stories are “based” on true stories and aren’t just a biography.

Great video as always❤️!! Gaoyang’s story in Road to Empress made me cry on the inside, and I was someone who did try to save the monk before accepting that you just couldn’t. Its just so well written, even if it might not be exactly historically accurate 😊

Road to empress made me obsessed about the Tang dynasty 😆 can't wait to see how Gaoyang's story is going to play out in part II of the game

I love how you almost whisper at 9:37 like you’re sharing a secret. This is the most ‘girls sleepover gossip’ video ever and I am HERE for it ❤

Funny how a book that was written nearly 400 years after she died, has more details about her than the one that was made before that. I will never believe anything written in the new book. Sounds like a bunch of bored men got together and wrote it 🤷🏾‍♀️😂.

It’s a shame we will never know the true story, but your information is interesting given missing and incomplete data. Great story.

Empress of China fans can still hear Gaoyang screaming out Bianji lolol after going crazy the rest of the show smh... I honestly did not know that storyline was even real lolol. This actually puts her madness into perspective now. Because at first it just seemed like an unnecessary act to cause chaos, but now it actually shows how deeply disgusted she had become with the confines of the entire dynasty (even though its not like she was so innocent herself lol)

Thank you for telling the very complete story of Princess Gaoyang. She, like Fu Hao and the poet Li Qingzhao, still fascinates me today. Not only because of their stories, but also because of their great legacies in always changing or bringing new directions to a world that until then was very rigid in terms of laws, rules, and even norms.

Bianji should stop being a monk after having an affair with the princess Gaoyang 😮

It is nice to hear of emperors actually investigating claims of crime instead of assuming guilt. Of course confessions can easily be forced and evidence faked, but it does seem like legitimate attempts were made to get the truth before choosing punishment.

OMG YES!! here I am encouraging y'all to try playing Road to Empress!! Though it may not be really historically accurate, the production and reimagined scenes are just top tier!!
