same with Filipino culture, we also don’t consider Filipino-Americans (Born and Raised in America with Fil parents) Filipinos 😂 they may look the part but they will always be American to us.

He is American  of Korean descent

I’m fascinated with how you and David switch back and forth between English and Korean so effortlessly. I would love to be able to so this. Love you guys❤

I feel a bit sorry for Jake. I'm guessing he really likes Mary, but he's realised her attraction to him is based on how Korean she perceives him to be. I don't think it's right to misrepresent yourself to attract someone, but I can understand that he's feeling internal pressure to appear a certain way in order to stay with her. I think you should date someone because you genuinely like them, not because you are interested in their culture.

As an American, I think your English is excellent. The fact that you speak at least 2 languages fluently, no less, is impressive. Most Americans appreciate and are impressed when nonnative English speakers try their best, even if it is broken English;  we realize that English can be a difficult language to learn. We have so many rules and words that are the same  but can have a different meaning and some of them make no sense. LOL!

I don't get why sooo manny seem to even suffer in adulthood, of their multiracial background. I am a Black-Native American German with Austrian decent. Grew up in Germany. Yes, ignorance and racism are real. But our mom always backed us up. We always knew our roots and were raised to be proud and embrace all cultures. My toddler added Kosovarian (Balkans) roots and is growing up multilingual. Embrace it, ya'll! And a Happy Christmas to everyone 🎅✌️🎉.

isn’t that fetishizing in a sense? she didn’t approach because she found him attractive she approached him because he was korean and she’s interested in the culture…. but it just seemed to me like a girl who has watched kdramas fantasized about how korean men would be and then got disappointed when it didn’t meet her expectations. I feel like jake fed into it because he knew she liked him because he was korean hence him constantly mentioning that “it’s because he’s korean” I don’t know i feel like it’s not genuine on both ends because no one is being treated as if they are just human but just by their ethnicity..

I love your English.  You're more articulate with your English than some people who are born with English as their first language.  Interesting video.  Thanks for sharing.  😊😊😊❤❤❤

School must have been tough for that person that ask if Korea is part of China! 🤦‍♂️

American here. I worked in a shipping company in Seattle in the 80’s, a big Korean conglomerate one. We had all US management and man! were they sexist but I digress. Headquarters in Seoul (or maybe it was Incheon? I forget) sent over a manager. The US managers mistrusted him, JK for Jongkwon, as a spy and treated him so disrespectfully. They even stuck him in with us girls, not with the other managers. Of COURSE he was sent here to report back to headquarters. Of course, so why didn’t our managers treat him better? They ridiculed his English, which I absolutely hated at the time. Americans can be so ignorant about other cultures. I’d studied Chinese and Japanese and knew enough about the broad education system in Asia to know that anyone who got a higher-level corporate job would not be a dummy. JK and his wife were lovely people and us girls in the office went to their house a few times for Korean feasts but I always felt awful about how he was treated and am very curious now about how all that played out (far above my pay grade of course). Apologies to Koreans in general for us Yanks being chauvinist boors

12:55 Man you are so right!! Reading is HUGE. I learned the hard way. Not only does it limit your vocabulary when you can’t read… but I realized my pronunciation was trash when I thought it was decent. Learning the alphabet first is so important.

14:01 This makes me so sad. I hate to see anyone belittled about mistakes. Some people are so small they have to find any way to make people feel less than. I hear all these stories about American travelers being obnoxious… I don’t doubt it… but I also think there isn’t one American culture anymore. It’s like what’s going on inside of the country right now. There are plenty of kind Americans and a lot of ignorant monsters I don’t want to live next to. So, I get it.

The issue with Jake an the airport was him trying to save face to his White-American girlfriend and male bravado. It's something that women sometimes deal with with men of with differing backgrounds who are not culturally confident or have a complex about their culture. The bravado part was him refusing to admit he was incorrect lol but you guys clocked it

Duuuude - it’s nutty how much this video brought up for me.  David- I think you are so on point. As a first generation American with Indian parents, you can get stuck in an imagined diaspora. Your parents left their home country at a certain point so their knowledge of their own country is pinned to a certain timeline and what they have to teach their children is from that era for their home country and it’s not current but historic knowledge. They don’t actually know how their country has evolved, changed, morphed as their home countries continue to grow without them, past them. Unless you are visiting on an annual basis with your kids, you wouldn’t necessarily know (or like you said, Jed, reading what’s popular, following the local news in the local language, etc.). And because you immigrated, you want your kids to assimilate as fast as possible so they can reap the benefits of why you immigrated in the first place but some things get sacrificed like your home language and literacy - the building blocks of your culture. And neither you or your kids realize how much you’ve missed out on until much later when they are adults and while it’s possible to still learn the language and be literate, it’s a hundred times harder, more frustrating and daunting of a task and if you can just take English when you are in Korea as a student, for instance, it’s easy to come to the conclusion of “why struggle if I don’t have to?”. There’s only so much time when you are raising your kids and doing your job and trying to keep up with your family in your home country too so things can get sacrificed and you only know what you know when you know it (not before, unfortunately ). I think it’s also why Asian-hyphenated Americans can be really conservative (for things like intimacy, for example) and separating any religious ideology from this for a second, because they were raised by folks holding onto an imagined culture and trying to keep something for themselves while also trying to be American - even though their home country has probably moved far beyond what they remember. And with speaking the language like English, you’re so afraid of getting dragged for not speaking the language properly (i.e. without an accent) within the States, you can end up internalizing that discrimination and discriminate against others, to the point of absurdity- such as making fun of people in Korea speaking English when you are in flipping Korea! Being from both places can sometimes feel comfortable and then not comfortable simultaneously because you can often feel like you aren’t from either place. I’m in my 40’s and I guess I mistakenly thought with the ability to connect to everyone all the time, I didn’t think younger generations were still feeling like this but I guess with Mary’s story- it’s all still in play. Being a hyphenate is a trip, man.

At 72, I’ve been learning Korean for two years. I greatly respect my Korean teacher for learning English. My Korean will never be as good as her English. All languages deserve respect.

Jake isn't being very honest, especially with himself.   Jed, you're Korean in real time.   Always keep it real.  Great story!!

I discovered your channel yesterday and watched a few episodes. I love the way you put your thoughts across so simply and effortlessly.

That's why I love Fridays 😊😊😊 Thank you for your new video!!!

You have beautiful expressive hands Jed.

The last part of the video was so cute 🥰.

Thank you guys for entertaining me! Always appreciate it!
