I was in Koh Phangan last week, and I’ve never seen people behave worse than the Israelis there. It was insane. The Thais are rightfully fed up with them.

Thailand belongs to Thai people , everyone else is visitor , so enjoy the visit and don't be greedy.

It's our land. We are taking it back from foreign invasion, especially those who treat us like "pigs"!!

they thought it was their new promised land

Good, every country should be doing the same.

Same thing in cyprus with the loophole. Our island is getting cooked

Good for Thailand, now rest of the wrold, take notes and start investigate all shady deals in your own community.

I live on Koh Phangan.  I'm a retired teacher, using Thailand as my 'base' for teaching in Myanmar for more than 25 years.  Koh Phangan has - IMHO - 2 large problems:  The first is not unique to the island.  It is the 'nominee' structure that Thai lawyers promoted to foreigners for decades as a means to open/own/control a company.  It has NEVER been legal, and the Thai lawyers knew that. But hey - they were making easy money from this 'scam'.  Now the Thai government is cracking down on these illegal companies because in certain tourist locations, such as Phangan, Samui, Phuket etc, it's getting out of hand.

The second problem is fairly unique to Phangan, and that is the large number of Israelis on the island.  Many are absolutely fine, polite, friendly, respectful of Thai people.  But unfortunately there seems to be a large number of Israelis who are arrogant, rude, entitled etc!  Imagine you are in a Bangkok 7/11 minimart.  Is it OK for a foreigner to enter your shop wearing nothing but a tiny thong up her crack!  This isn't a 7/11 right on the beach.  I and the 7/11 young female staff have looked on open-mouthed as Israeli women enter the shop in this attire.  Perhaps they have never been educated about good manners and respect, perhaps they simply don't care..  The bottom line is that if they understood Thai language (as I do), they would hear the 7/11 staff refer to them as 'whores' and prostitutes.  Absolutely no respect by these foreigners for the conservative Buddhist religion and traditions.....

Virus needs a Host to survive

its their country, their rules....

Well, if you get thrown out of 109 bars, you probably drink too much.

People need to be respectful when they go to a foreign country. Follow the laws. Don’t try to colonize.

As a foreign resident of Thailand for almost 5 years, I don’t own property, business or land, but am aware that lawyers were creating structures to go-around the laws - and the potential risks of being caught doing so, losing same investments, and possibly jail. Anyone who has knowingly created an illegal structure should be shown ZERO sympathy as they have been caught doing something wrong, and you can’t blame ignorance of the law as an excuse! If these ‘investors’ went to legitimate, big Thai law firms, they would have been given the correct advice, but I suspect they used lawyers who were prepared to create underhanded structures. Kick them all out of Thailand!

They were breaking the law for years and now are upset that Thai government had finally fed up and started enforcing the law...

Cool :) As one of those backpackers from the 90s I love to see the Island go back to be Thai

It looks to me that Thailand finally take back their country

Going into a foreign country with the attitude of “I’ll do what I want until I’m told otherwise” is the definition of entitlement.

When you enter another country, the responsibility should not fall on the people who live there to constantly tell you what is inappropriate, disrespectful, or unacceptable.
It is your responsibility as a visitor to learn where you are, understand the basic laws and customs, and behave with consideration for the people whose home you have entered.

Being a tourist does not mean the country becomes your playground until somebody tells you “no.”

You are not entitled to push every boundary until a local, employee, police officer, or government official finally stops you. Respect is not something that should only appear after consequences do.

There is a massive difference between genuinely making a cultural mistake and deliberately living by “nobody told me I couldn't.”

When you travel, you are a guest. Act like one.

The people who live there should not have to teach you respect after you arrive. You should bring it with you.

So nice that they're finally cracking down on the Israelis on Koh Phangan. They have systematically ruined this beautiful island.

Well written, well-presented essay.  Kudos.  In an aside, if you don't mind, there is a marvelous book called "Siam Was Our Home," by Edna Bruner Bulkley.  She was a Christian missionary who came to Trang in 1904 to open the Kingdom's first Western-medicine hospital outside of Bangkok.  She lived in Siam/Thailand until the 1970s.  She and her husband had six children in Trang, who were all farang by blood but Thai citizens by birthright.  They all went to university in the USA but their primary educations were in Thai schools.  After reading the book I wondered what happened to her children.  I found a Facebook post by her youngest daughter from the mid-2000s.  In it she says that she's been selling real estate on Koh Samui for twenty years, but the business has become too corrupt and violent so she's quitting.  This is a Thai citizen, Western educated, fluent in the Thai language and Thai property law.  But the corruption and violence finally drove her out.  Take note, wanna be real estate developers.
