Been married to a Thai for 17 years. You ought to interview guys like us if you want the full story and not just all this superficial surface stuff. Not these young guys who’ve been here a short time and been on a few dates.

Ok this is much better interview than prior. As a Thai, skin tone is a big deal. Thai culture isn’t racist, but definitely classist.

Super insightful episode! What a lot of guys miss is that Thai women value subtlety and patience over aggressive chasing. Met my partner on thai love, and taking time to actually learn the culture was the best decision I've made here.

Been in Thailand for 3.5 years and this is an extremely accurate interview on Thai culture. It's also why I've stayed single for my entire time here. Thailand is not what most Western guys believe where you can "just get any girl you want". Sure, if you want superficial, it's everywhere. But, if you're at a stage in life where you want something more meaningful, it's a different story. In a weird way, its been extremely good for me, as I've learnt to be a lot more present and not chase for the next girlfriend. My life is sabai sabai. I even more recently moved to the countryside, so it's even more traditional Thai culture.

Dating Thai women can be difficult for foreign men because you’re not just being judged as a romantic partner — you’re being evaluated on whether you can fit into Thailand’s cultural system of Boon Khun and Sin Sod. In Thailand, love isn’t only about two people; it’s tied to family duty, financial responsibility, and the expectation that children support their parents. So when a foreign man enters the picture, many Thai women naturally assess whether he can meet those cultural needs. And sometimes what feels like “love” to a foreigner is actually a means to an end — affection that lasts only as long as the partner can support the entire family. It’s not manipulation; it’s the reality of a culture where family survival depends on the daughter choosing a man who can carry the load. For Western men who aren’t used to that, the pressure hits hard and makes the whole dating experience feel completely different. I’m never surprised when foreigners say, “I’ve lived in Thailand for ten years and still don’t understand the culture.” Part of that is ignorance, and part of it is pure incompetence!!!!

2:00 - This makes Thailand intolerable long term. The deeper issue is that there is flat out scams. and unless it says: “this is a scam” it’s not treated as a scam. For example the DLT near where I was saying was running a scam where they get everyone to run through an agent so they get a kickback. Instead of saying it, they make everyone line up at 7:30am and it opens at 8:30am or they are rude on purpose to get you to leave.

Or at Phuket airport, they get a fine from the airline for turning someone away, so are actively trying to reject people to get the fine.

But calling this out would be them ‘losing face’. So it’s annoying that no conflict can be resolved. but it’s also actively used to run scams. And when you call out the scam or get angry, you are more likely to get punished then them for ‘breaking the peace’.

After a year, I was like, yeah, nar fuck this.

You are about 70% correct and my biggest advice is not to hunt for GF from pubs and massage parlour. If you have one, just be very careful not to lose all your assets.

Compared to the U.S., Eric's spot on about the feminine social calibration, the sameness in disinterested and interested women, and girls giving you their LINE ID that aren't attracted to you. Same about not apologizing, admitting wrongdoing, or not addressing a service issue but implying they will. Not in a bad way- it's just different until you understand to go WAY more on action than demeanor/vibe

Cannot appreciate enough that Eric came up with a great podcast. Me as an average Joe learning a lot about nightlife and leisure activities in BKK. And this episode tops up and sheds light on his more profound side. In the last 2 years his podcast improved a lot. He is a very intelligent man who is able to decode the Thai etiquette and articulate it very actionably for everyone. Great person.

Why is he saying "intimate"? The words are .. "into me". In the west, if a girl is not interested, she will often say she has a boyfriend. She may or she may not. but either way, the guy should understand to cross her off his list. She may even take his phone number, but if she doesn't respond to a message or two, that lack of response should be clear .. she is not into you. In my experience, Thai women are generally about the same. Give the contact, but if she does not message you, well duh, she is not into you. Thai women are certainly more friendly about it, although in the west if a girl is rude or acts like .. "as if" .. then I for one know I didn't want to be with a tart like her anyway.

been here ten years. the longer I am here, the more I realize how little I actually understand Thai culture. and that's the adventure for me! I have nothing but admiration and respect for Thais and Thai culture, it has rubbed off on me in a good way.

thais deeply care about their reputations and they are not capable of deep conversations but they are great for small talk - actually this applies to mostly all southeast asians.
