I like it, but it is not for me. It is beautiful,  but not on me.
Something to keep in our minds.

I hate the term “investment piece” and I also hate “retail therapy.” Both only serve to reinforce the idea that women are bad with money.

Yes, yes, yes.  Going shopping and leaving empty-handed is a HUGE WIN for me now.  I see it as a prize for making thoughtful choices for myself.  Now at the tender age of 79 (in 2 weeks), I am grateful to you and a few other minimalist influencers for helping me see I needed to terminate the addictive shopping I was doing. Thank you for your insights and advice!

Sometimes undiagnosed depression can show up as compulsive shopping. In many cases, we’re chasing a quick burst of excitement with every purchase. In my situation, a major factor was low self esteem — something my siblings and I struggled with because of how we were raised. Our mother consistently compared us to friends and cousins, telling us we were stupid, unaccomplished, and not as attractive as other girls. Those comments, repeated over time, created deep self esteem issues.
We also had neurological challenges that made it difficult to excel in school and social settings, so shopping became a way to find that “perfect” item that might help us feel acceptable in the eyes of others. It took me many years to understand why I was doing this and to finally recognize the root cause: health and neurological issues combined with early emotional wounds that led to low self worth and a constant desire to prove we were worthy. It’s sad, but I know many people go through something similar.

I have two lululemon jackets in my closet still with the tags on that in total cost me over $250. I already have like 5 of these jackets, your video helped me realize what I’m doing and I’ll be taking them back tomorrow.

I'm so guilty of buying beautiful things and not wearing them.  Sometimes it takes a year or two to get back to it.  Then I might actually wear it a few times when it isn't so "precious".

"you don't need to own the thing in order to appreciate it "
(i totally agree )

10:04 buying online promotes mindless shopping . I make much better decisions when I only buy in person .

Having a colour analysis done was fhe best thing for me. You realise at least 75% of the clothes for sale don't flatter you. Then refining it further to avoid synthetics/plastics (polyester mostly) narrows the pool even more. You realise that only maybe 5% of the clothes out there fit that criteria. And that's even before working out what items do and don't suit your body shape.

I think investment pieces are great for people whose bodies literally never change but that is unlikely. As someone with a body that has fluctuated a lot this past decade as I moved from fitness fanatic, then a mom, then into middle age I would never bother again except handbags and necklaces. Shoes? Feet change. Rings? Fingers can change! Clothes? Obvi bodies change. Never falling for the excuse of investment shopping again. Now I only think in terms of ‘will I likely be able to wear this for 2-3 years’ and keep my closet small.

the word "insecurity" has been the theme of my entire life - it started at 14 when I stopped eating, and because of our situation (1970) we didn't have the money for frivolous things like clothes...so as soon as I graduated high school I got a job and clothes were my addiction of choice...it took almost my entire life to "grow up" and even tho I still have more than I need, I'm getting better...and its nice to know that nowadays NO ONE is looking at me....good vid!

‘I was a fashion victim to a trend…..’.       Yes that is a big problem for many.    People buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like, with money they don’t have.

I love dresses. To appreciate what I already have and avoid overconsumption, I started a list in my phone of all my dresses and tick each time I wear them. It's been an insightful way to see what I actually wear and remind myself of the diversity of options I already have.

To me, an “investment piece” has been purchasing quality scrubs that actually fit my body in colors that actually suit my complexion and personality (I like Figs). This allows me to show up at work looking clean, professional, and confident. They allow me to do my job better without having to constantly be adjusting my clothing, and they tell my employer that I am committed to doing my job well. I don’t buy every color and style they make, just what suits my body and style, and I endeavor to do everything in my power to get them when there are sales instead of paying full price. An investment piece should ultimately be an investment in yourself and your future.

As I have gotten older, I ask my self if this is something I am willing to manage before I purchase it.  I also heard another YouTuber (completely unrelated type of videos) tell her daughter that she doesn’t need to own all the beautiful things in the world.  That stopped me in my tracks.  I can now appreciate something without bringing it home.

3:38 “Do I already own something similar?” is a question I also ask myself when contemplating a new piece to my wardrobe. That said, I’ve recently started wondering whether similarity is necessarily a bad thing—or whether, at some point, it’s simply a sign that you’ve pinpointed your personal style.

To be clear, by “similar,” I mean exactly that—not (1) buying duplicates of the same garment or (2) buying the same piece in multiple colors. If we’re this knee-deep in the comments, we probably already know how that tends to go. 😂

To anyone reading: take all of this with a grain of salt. I may just be rationalizing my next purchase. 😅

I was and still am a sucker for purses. Small, big, cute or holds alot of other junk. Enjoyed this video. I'll think of it next time I see a purse😂

Goodness this hit hard 😕 you were speaking about your own regrets but I could identify with each one. I have been working really hard to understand my reasons for compulsive shopping. It is creators like you who allow me to make breakthroughs by being honest and vulnerable. I plan to rewatch this video a few times to reflect on my own personal reasons for buying. There’s still too many things that I need to unravel and understand. Sincerely thank you, Christina 😊 from a fellow Cristina

Well said Christina! A few things I do before purchasing:
-Does it actually fit well?
-Is the fabric good quality?
- Does the colour suit me?
-Do I just want it because it's on sale?
-Will I need new shoes, a belt etc. to "make this item work"?
I know online shopping can be a slippery slope, but after carefully picking something out, I buy two sizes of the same item. I get to see how many outfits I can create with the items. I return what doesn't fit.
