The death penalty is not the problem it’s a symptom of a completely broken legal system . The entire legal System in this country is completely arbitrary and governed by politics not law. The number of death row exonerations is incredibly disturbing not just because of the innocent people who were either executed or almost executed but because typically prosecutors only go for the death penalty with their strongest cases. Defendants facing death typically get some of the best defense attorneys in a state with a practically limitless defense budget. Then they likewise get experienced appeals lawyers with seemingly endless appeals all of which actually get taken seriously. What does that mean for people sentenced to life in prison? If someone is innocent and charged with murder they are far better off if the state goes for the death penalty. They say death is different but how different is it really? Regardless if someone is sentenced to LWOP or the death penalty they will spend decades in prison and will only leave in a body bag. If 5% of prisoners sentenced to death are innocent how many innocent people are sentenced to life? We should be certain people are guilty before we lock them in a cage!
