I love RAYE and she always puts lots of thought into her music videos, if you haven’t already I highly recommend RAYE - Genesis the video is amazing! This video specifically gives me very Alice in Wonderland with that door scene and the wacky shots!

I wish you had commented on all of this with the lyrics in mind. I know I've seen a lot of videos where the visual representation didn't connect to the lyrics so much, but-- to me-- the lyrics were integral to what was being portrayed on screen.
When I first saw this it just floored me. The feeling of depression and and the way she was portrays it... Stuck in an uncomfortable position with "her glass" from the lyrics, but from this position there's no way she can get up without help, the glass will break.
It felt like such an astute commentary on depression. You stay home because you keep yourself busy with electronics, cry so much you feel drenched in tears, hide in the comfy couch or bed... And then after a while, it begins to feel like you can't go out. The door is so huge, you can't open it.

But what is it that helps her?? Obviously her friends, interacting with people... Helps pull her out and gives her incentive to climb through that impossible door. But also music. Music carries her all across the country.

And this lady is a poet.
I honestly cannot get her album out of my head... It's not just beautiful, it's just so true!

Why does no one understand the hose?!  The lyrics LITERALLY tell you about her ''waterproof mascara'' aka she's cried and cried and it still hasn't washed off. Too many people getting caught up in the video, and not LISTENING. Her lyrics are vastly important and the video is a reference to THEM, not the other way around

I would suggest reading the lyrics and then rewatching (the opening lines literally tell that she conquered the odds of being born, but can't conquer leaving the house. The lyrics are largely no metaphorical). A lot of the symbolism in the visuals is lifted directly from the lyrics being sung in each scene, and there's a lot more that you catch in the visuals when you hear the lyrics and are kind of directed what to look for/pay attention to.

Very whimsical, like Alice in Wonderland - so British - perfect!

I recommend another of her older videos, Genesis, a three-part song she says she is particularly proud of. The lyrics and messaging in Genesis are wonderful and we can truly see her songwriting skilld and how she portrays the message in the video. Also, if you wan to see a song as film, I suggest Dimash's The Story of One Sky. It is a 10-minute-long film with him singing the soundtrack the whole time. He is from Kazahkstan, many consider him to one of best vocalists in the world. It took him three years to compose the song, spent $3 million to produce the film, sings in 14 languages, and is an independent artist. Although the song is in English, I recommend using the English subtitles as some pronunciation may trip you up. His singing in a wide range of octaves and registers is a deep song about everyone of all religions needing peace. It is truly mind blowing and emotional and the Pope gave him an award for being a messenger for peace.

Peace and love from BavaRAYEa <3 Thanks!

9:26 that's the ceiling of the house it's filmed, a manor house/museum un London, I temporarily forget the name of. (Remembered Pitshanger Manor and Museum). The shadow is answered in the about section, the stand-in faux Hans Zimmer.
10:22 the wires and some other visuals and lyrics mirror Raye's situation in Genesis part 1, the red dress mirrors that amazing video too.
The wires on the wall look like a spider web.
References to films and literature throughout that involve being trapped, escape, a journey, travel to another realm.
The music notes that are part shoes at the beginning, click clacking, were Raye's idea.

The clothing is firmly in the 60s actually, not 70s. Raye loves the 60s.

The door is not at the manor house the rest is filmed in, that part is all illusion.

There are also references to other songs by Raye, including one she previously did with Hans Zimmer, The 'Mother Nature' spinning planet.

It's winter. They filmed in winter. The album is divided into 4 seasons, this is in the winter section

The crossing besides the movie Big, could also refer to the Beatles, she's recorded live version of 2 songs that have been released, Nightingale Lane and I Know You're Hurting at Abbey Road Studios synonymous with the Beatles as is a photo of them on the crossing outside. They may have also had a little influence on her writing in at least one of her songs in that they wrote some story telling songs about normal working class people and their situations and Raye did that in 'Happier Times Ahead' and another she didn't release, working man's lullaby I think it was called.

I think the old film cutting effect on the Marry Poppins scene is intentional… evoking the original 😊

Another great and interesting song and video from Raye is 'Genisis'. It would be another good one to analyse.

2nd collaboration w/Hanz by the way.  “Mother Nature” was the first

Love the surrealist effect that is being used in this video. Favorite part: using the high heels to climb the door, like you would use pickaxes for mountain climbing... Not sure about the flying part though... They might have intentionally chosen to make it look fake to show it's not reality, but in comparison to the quality of the whole video I feel the difference is too big... Otherwise, even though this is not really the kind of music I listen to, I loved the storytelling and the collab with Hans Zimmer, I love his music.

Wow love how observant you are, lots have commented on the flying part and the lighting etc spoiling that bit. I just concentrate in the nice view in those.

I like the train reference too…click , clack, click, clack…
And I wonder if the iconic red dress and freestyle dance is a reference to Kate Bush’s withering heights dance.

2 THINGS I NOTCED THIS WATCH:  (10 millionth x).

1st: the BIG DOOR….
It has a cross bracing on it.. but it’s a cross she’s climbing … like a cross “women” have to bear when you are a woman… a cross that all women have to climb and conqueror… and one of her girls catches her when she slips….  Sisterhood support as well.

The other thing (and it’ll seem crass but I don’t think it is.. i’s ownership).  When she’s then on the streets in the red dress and she’s singing “let the girls out’… now… ‘the girls’ is often termed as the female upper chest…and she was embracing her femininity and not being constrained… she was EMPOWERMENT… IN ALL HER WOMANHOOD, no question of hiding oneself.. i felt like it was a subtle nod to not being restricted… am i crazy?

Those are the 2 things I noticed new in this one.

Genesis is great yes! But I love the video from Escapism as well. If you love some surrealism thats the one to watch

👋❤❤❤❕

Hey you should really check out the song Ren just dropped. I love your reactions to him. I miss them!! Hope your doing amazing. Have a great weekend!

I thought the same; the niggle for me were the VFX on the flying segment - I found it a bit jarring - but that is really nit-picking. She's an independent artist, so budget is a restriction (although she goes maximilist in the music and live shows)

Some places the concerts tickets are extremely expensive. The GRANNIES AWART didn't give MS RAYE 💋 a 🏆 but making 💰💵💴💵 off her concerts. It's best to purchase the tickets earlier.
