Thank you for going on this journey with me and I hope people aren't too mad at my conflicted feelings about this album...I really do think it is special in a way that is hard to verbalize...but it is SPECIAL nonetheless!

Raye went to work with Al Green in Memphis- what you're hearing is his legendary classic sound, not "a crappy mic" or "the file".

I think you’ll get the most appreciation out of Raye with her live performances, where you can hear her vocals almost always accompanied by a big band backing.

With Raye, the lyrics are absolutely essential as they often tell a story. If you don't listen to music where there is a lot of depth, where very often the effects which take place in the music reflect the lyrics, then yes, this wouldn't be something for you. At least you tried it.

I get that not every album is going to land for everyone, but I feel like this one really needed to be approached differently. This isn’t just a collection of songs -it’s clearly a narrative-driven, very intentional project. A lot of the meaning is in the lyrics and the spoken parts, so brushing past that kind of misses the core of what she’s trying to do.

The spoken interludes especially didn’t feel excessive to me -they add context, emotion, and continuity. It’s part of what makes the album feel cohesive rather than just a playlist. I actually think that ambition is one of its strongest points, even if it makes it a bit more demanding to listen to.

Also, the comment about her accent feels a bit unfair. It’s pretty normal for artists to sound different when singing vs speaking -that’s just how vocal delivery works, especially when you’re switching between expressive singing and more raw, conversational moments.

And honestly, it’s a bit surprising to see someone who listens to so much music be so closed off to new ideas or different approaches to structure and sound -especially on a project that’s clearly trying to push beyond the usual formula.

Totally respect that it didn’t connect with you, but I think this is one of those albums that reveals more the deeper you engage with it.

I personally love the album. But I totally get that you wouldn’t necessarily like every song. You gave your honest opinion. Which is refreshing. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things. I appreciate you were also looking the album from a technical recording point of view and picking up things that I as an untrained person I wouldn’t necessarily of picked up on.
Raye is an independent artist and has funded this album her self. As well as a recording artist she has earned a reputation as a fantastic live performer. She performs with a band, backing singers, brass section, sometimes with a choir and an orchestra. If you ever want to react to her performing live have a look at Nightingale Lane performed live at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Flames Collective choir.
There are many live performances but any of her songs at the Royal Albert Hall are well a look.

She’s touring the United States now and it’s sold out. She just had two shows at Radio City. I saw her Chicago show at The Auditorium and it was amazing. She’s a phenomenal live performer. She’s also opening for Bruno Mars on the final leg of his tour. She also performed at the Grammy’s in 2025.

I struggle to listen to lyrics when I'm paying attention to the arrangement/production, so from a sound engineer pov makes sense.

And I'm grateful for the artist suggestions.

Click clack symphony “the background music is just simple it’s a few strings” 😆 🤦‍♀️ Hans Zimmer isn’t what I’d describe as simple. Crikey this was an interesting watch. The negative bias from the off was like a wall of resistance. Hope you have a better day tomorrow 🙌🏻
