I cannot take this movie seriously after seeing that letterboxd review  asking “why would you show up fat and wearing jeans”😭

In the book someone tries to escape at night. The soldiers have night vision and gun him down the moment his foot steps off the road lmao.

Imagine you just got chosen and when you just arrived you See david goggins warming up😭

One major change is in the book, they have to walk at 4 miles an hour. But 4 miles an hour is actually jogging, so the change for 3 miles an hour actually makes sense.

the movie is basically mr beast if he owned a military

It was the Mythbusters that did a test once. Where they figured out that even just closing your eyes can be beneficial. So you don't need to sleep. Just walking at a steady rythm with your eyes closed for a while will help you. It's at least better than trying to keep your eyes open the whole time.

This movie is so heart breaking. If you take it as a metaphor for war, suddenly they don’t seem so stupid. Of course this is a crazy thing to join for money because only one person gets to live. But we also have to consider what makes people sign up for the army. it’s the theme of poor, desperate young men being promised an incredible future. You get to know your fellow soldiers only to watch them die horrific deaths for no real purpose. There’s no dignity in dying like this.

The term "paradoxical undressing" refers to extreme hypothermia when the person starts to feel hot even though they are freezing to death.

Tbh I kinda liked how much they swore. I mean who wouldn't be swearing up a storm in a life or death situation

The movie is symbolic of the Vietnam draft. The dog tags, the lottery, the brotherhood, and wanting to stick is to the man, the major telling them that the long walk is the best way to honor your country

your videos are like watching a movie with that friend who complains about how unrealistic the movie is or how stupid the characters are.

At 60 miles in let alone 100 or 200, any pair of boots will start to hurt. Your feet, thighs, and even buttcheeks will start chafing sooner or later, no matter what you're wearing, so your only option is to push through the pain, which probably won't be that difficult since the fear of death is a helluva motivator. You'll probably collapse from exhaustion before you collapse from pain anyway.

It's an illusion of choice. They said as much in the movie. That's the trick, things are so bad that you are willing to join the Long Walk. IIRC, when the book was written the long walk was an allegory for the Vietnam War and how they got young at risk/vulnerable boys to throw their lives away because it honourable thing to do.

That’s not what paradoxical undressing means. It refers to when someone is hypothermic, but their brain registers it as feeling too hot, so they undress even though they’re actually freezing to death. That’s why it’s “paradoxical.”

This movie was a lot more traumatizing than I had expected.

Now one of my biggest fears is what happened to that one dude's foot

4:05 he didn’t give off serial killer vibes at all, only the vibes of a troubled young man seeking friendship, but too distant to allow it to happen. A more sympathetic version of a bully. It’s sad, he wanted friends but had no clue how to make them, his concluding scene clearly shows he’s not a bad person, but a young, misguided one, and alone at that.

Socks are equally, if not more important than quality of hiking boots. You'd want something water resistant, so it didn't sog. But really, fitness and prep only get you so far. This is a death march, meant to break the human spirit, you'd have to have the toughest psyche out of the bunch to actually win.

The book is way more intense, and it was children 13-18 and 100 of them, and spectators are watching them on the street like a parade all the time. Their situations were worse AND the ending is way better in the book

"Signing up was completely optional"

Literally miss the entire point of the movie including the 10 minute discussion where they directly say literally everyone ever has signed up for it...

There’s another interpretation based on the short story ending that Pete dies. The empty street, the silence, and his choice to continue walking into the darkness with no repercussion from the soldiers supports that. In reality they shot him the second he killed the Major.
