"General Sherman is on his way" is not something you want to hear if you're on the opposing side lol.

Never knew that at some point in history, Napoleon fought against William Wallace 🤯

Wilmer McLean, who had farmed at Manassas Junction in 1861 - left his farm after the first battle to settle with his wife's family at Appomattox - so he could honestly say the US Civil War started in his back yard and ended in his front room!

The terms of surrender were very gracious. It's humbling to think of it, really. I'm not sure I could have brought myself to be so gracious in victory considering how bloody the war was.

They surrendered because they were beaten.

Their generals fought flashy battles rather than thinking strategically, when they had neither the manpower or war material to do so.

In the 1990s, the history channel had a great show called “April 1865” that explained all this. Worth searching for it.

It would be great to see a Downfall movie of the Confederacy.

Thank you for these 4 episodes. I am from the UK and I have been so ignorant about this period in American history, which somehow still seems relevant to appreciating the state of the US today. Thanks. M

Lee and the Confederacy did not deserve the generosity and grace Grant showed.

Lee: “Fine, fine. no more slaves. But we still don’t have to read books!”
Grant: “Deal.”

21:00 The first modern war was the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856, whose major battle of Sevastopol strongly resembled the siege of Petersburg ten years later.

2:30 I asked Billy and Joel if they were the ones who started that fire. Their response was, and I quote, "We didn't start the fire".😁

18:15 Lee is quoted as saying he'd rather die a thousand deaths than see General Grant.. The question is how many tens or hundreds of thousands of people was Lee willing to let die to delay the inevitable bruising of his ego?

After the fall of Vicksburg and the battle of Gettysburg the Civil War was all but over. The south was out of resources and blockades resulted in isolation of divisions that couldnt be maintained long term.
