I've been here.  My solution was to recognize that I am two people: one's a nerd, one's an emotional wreck.  The emotional wreck is the music maker.  The nerd is the one that loves dissecting sound. Knowing which one I am at any moment is what makes production happen. See, when I'm in nerd mode, I consciously know I'm not making any music today, but everything I make will be in a tune later and the other me will take care of that.  Then on those days when nerd me is vacationing on an island and can't be bothered, emotional me is there, sees all the stuff nerd me made and gets REALLY excited and starts just making music without thinking.

I think consumerism has conditioned a lot of people to seek external solutions for their lack of motivation or and such (I'm very much guilty of that too, everyone is and anyone who says otherwise is lying), and giving into that TOO much will start to form a habit. It's important to be as introspective on yourself as it is to actually like the equipment or instruments or methods you're using.

It's also worth mentioning some people literally ARE just more into sound exploration than making music...they're the muse making the patches that change and shape genres...music is collaborative, always!

I though bro was gonna tell us to use acoustic pianos, violins, and guitars 😭🙏

Theres a project i had in college which consisted of making a full song w only 1 object (like a washing machine) so u could only use those samples n modify them, it was pretty cool

You are absolutely right. Within a synth it is quite hard to get a happy accident. So you either process a sample, or use some spectral effects that may surprise you.

From a sound design standpoint, the approach is strong, and that’s where experimenting with Ableton really shines. I still love what you can do with synths, even some presets on traditional synths can be manipulated to achieve a sound that’s uniquely your own. When you work this way, experimentation has no limits.

Great channel, thank you for all the insights!

Recording specified enviroment sounds propably will make you better producer too :P For instance go to steelworks and you will get full package of great techno samples 😁

FWIW a big problem with synths is the flat tuning. Every not has the exact same character. One option is to add a dissonant/glitch/detune overtone component or layer.
Real keyboard instruments (Rhodes Hammond whatever) are not that perfectly tuned, there are margins and compromises, and each note presents ever so slightly different.

Thanks man. I appreciate that you give off actual workflows, and not just the old 'tricks' that are just plain useless and confusing

In Reason there is a Synth specifically designed to do a similar thing called Objekt

Gotta love a breakthrough that's been common knowledge synthesists were able to integrate instead of abandoning synths decades ago.

You can feed corpus midi as well if you want to resonate tonally within a scale if you want actual melody instead of just random resonance

Wow great sounds from such simple beginnings.

This helped me a lot thanks

I always remember the demo song that comes with Renoise 3, I Understand Now by Sunjammer. Beautiful haunting melody, and it uses just a single sample of something like a Jupiter playing a basic brass patch. Play it back at different speeds, add reverb and delay, and the result amazes me at how it does so much with so little. Something I like to do now and again is to use a single sound source and manipulate, bounding many times if necessary. For example taking a singe drone out of e.g. Diva, putting it through ShaperBox, and essentially using ShaperBox to do everything. If you think back to the days of the original Doctor Who theme (Delia Derbyshire's rendition), it was all about manipulating and arranging sounds creatively.

that was a great effect chain and final lead sound indeed. and yeah, you are absolutely right. one shouldn't use synths all the time for everything. working with samples immediatly adds a layer of natural complexity to everything and makes it easy to come up with a unique but pleasant texture. when i was a teenager this was still common knowledge but these days where everyone is learning the craft from youtube instead of autodidactically, people orientate themselves around the things we say about music production, but the people should consider that we content creators are limited by this context. like.. if we wanna upload a song on soundcloud or bandcamp no one cares if we use a sample or so, but when we upload a yt video we have to strictly avoid any samples that can get us copyright-claimed, which makes it much more likely that we present something that can be done with synths instead. one shots like this are still pretty safe, but you never know and they can delete a channel over some bs like that. people should really consider that when they listen to us. youtube is not the full picture and this video only shows a glimpse of why that is the case

Really great tutorial that actually gives original sound design 👍

This vid made me subscribe, I love learning fresh sound design techniques and I totally relate to what you said, trying hard on patches just to get them generic is not fun

Broooo, learned so much with it wtf
