The Making of Mork and Mindy (1978 to 1982)

Mork & Mindy is a classic ABC sitcom that aired from 1978 to 1982, starring Robin Williams as Mork, a lovable alien from the planet Ork who is sent to Earth to study human behavior, and Pam Dawber as Mindy McConnell, the kind-hearted young woman from Boulder, Colorado, who becomes his roommate, friend, and eventually his wife. Spun off from an appearance by Mork on Happy Days, the series blended science fiction with family comedy, using Mork's innocent misunderstandings of Earth customs to satirize everyday life while delivering messages about kindness, love, and acceptance. Robin Williams' extraordinary improvisational talent, physical comedy, and rapid-fire humor made Mork one of television's most memorable characters, helping turn the show into an instant hit. Over its four-season run, the series evolved from fish-out-of-water comedy into a family sitcom as Mork and Mindy married and raised their unusual son, Mearth, while continuing to celebrate friendship, optimism, and the joy of seeing humanity through the eyes of an outsider.

I can’t believe he died in 2014. His memory is still so strong even today in 2026! What an amazing legacy he left for us!😢

When John Belushi died, Pam was the one who broke the news to Robin, who had seen Belushi before he OD'd. Pam told Robin that if that ever happened to him, she'd find him and kill him first. She told Robin to shape up, and Robin told her that would never happen to him and he got sober after that.

The actor who plays the cop on the pilot episode is Geoffrey Lewis who is the father of actress Juilet Lewis (Cape Fear, Christmas Vacation). Lewis was a wonderful character actor. He worked a lot with Clint Eastwood during the 1970s & 80s. From Thunderbolt & Lightfoot all the way to Pink Cadillac, the two were great together.

This was a joy to watch. You managed to fill some gaps in my own journey in television history. American shows were extremely popular in Germany after the you know what, and I learned German watching dubbed shows like Mork and Mindy and many more from my home in Denmark. It's funny to catch the references from the past and "translate" events and language again after so many years.
You did a very good job and gave me closure on Robin and especially the rumours about using other people's materials, that was very sweet of you. So thanks for the good work and you just earned a new subbie 😊

For the narrator of this documentary about Robin Williams and the show Mork and Mindy, 4of my favorite movies with Robin Williams are Toys, Bicentennial Man, Aladdin and Hook. 2 other movies that Robin Williams was in are Jack and Jumanji along with Mrs Doubtfire.

37:20 "4-camera set-ups." Cheers, Frasier, and The Big Bang Theory all used four cameras to cover a large ensemble, while M&M needed all of them to cover one guy...

You have a picture of Judy Garland in there who you describe as Robin Williams' mother.

I remember when Robin Williams committed suicide, for me personally it was very shocking and sad as one never knows what private demons one has. RIP Mr. Williams RIP.

I had the PRIVILEGE of meeting and spending about 90 minutes with Robin Williams in the Late 80's after a club show. He was Amazingly Kind to me. My Boyfriend at the time was drunk and passed out behind the wheel of his car, leaving me stranded at the club with no way home. Robin Called a Cab for me and Paid for it, so I didn't have to call my parents. (I was 17 at the time.) I had Recently been diagnosed with my disability, (I have a Neuromuscular Disease.) and he asked about it, and even after I Told him, he still treated me like a Human being, not some China Doll ready to shatter if you breathe too close to it, or like a Leper who was instantly contagious if you got too close, or Worst of all Like a Burden to Society. He not only treated me like a Human, he Treated me like I Mattered, and like my LAUGHTER mattered. and I have NEVER forgotten that. I Will NEVER forget the Hugs, He was the First person to HUG ME in more than a YEAR.
Thank-You Robin. Thank-You.
