YO I HAD THIS THING I LOVED IT! Came with a gun and everything lmao. Mine had a fake n64 stick in the middle that didn't move. I plugged it into the wall years after finding it in storage and the capacitors immediately exploded and caught fire <3

The most egregious thing with these isn't the piracy, it isn't the bootlegging, it's the hardware messing up the sound. The sound being bad is always going to be my number 1 complaint.

Even back then, people were doing the whole "A zillion games in one machine" schtick. You know what they say; "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

my favourite part of the fabletics ads is watching the progress of Clue's hair getting longer. It's looking good

Sometimes, these types of bootlegs were the only way you could experience video games in some countries, for example my country (Poland) you could either get a Pegasus (famiclone) or nothing.
And there were imports, but those were expensive, so most people had a fake insted of the original.

Nowadays you don't even NEED a bootleg console to do this stuff. I have literally seen DS games running in just a web browser and those are just the sites I know about.

When i was younger my dad built an arcade with thousands of roms on it, and thats all i played for years before i was introduced to his ps3 and xbox 360. Piracy has never hurt billion dollar corporations and when it allows people to experience games the way i did, it should be celebrated

I love stories like this ... discovering gaming and getting into it from something like a crappy knockoff ... are they horrible quality?  Oh heck yeah.  But what they help instill in young gamers is ... beautiful!

2:10 idk if this is common knowledge but I just find it really neat that Nintendo also had their Game Counselors that you could call for tips, too! Like, imagine working your nine-to-five as someone who studied video games!

That dude who got five years in prison also had kiosks set up in Wisconsin, which is where I managed to persuade my dad to buy one of the systems. It was fun for about a year before it broke, build quality was abysmal. If it still worked I'd still have it. I got a NES around the time it broke and wondered why the cartridges wouldn't fit in the back of the controller.

I got one of those from a flea market while visiting my grandparents in Florida as a kid. Right out of the box it wouldn't work so I just cut the cord off the lightgun and used it as a toy.

The first game console I touched was a psvita clone filled with MAME and gba roms. I genuinely loved that thing because it was my introduction to the best GBA games (Advance wars and a japanese Beyblade one). Even had a camera and a music player.

Clone game consoles like that should be more appreciated tbh

Before I owned a Famicom, I had one of these to play Famicom carts with, bought around the same time your parents bought you yours.

Nintendo is pretty fucking evil. Look up Gary Bowser. They put this guy in jail and will be taking a portion of any money he earns for the rest of his life because he was part of a Switch modding operation. He owes them $14 million, which he can never pay in full, so he'll just pay until he dies.

Yet another living example of how unofficial methods of playing games can make someone a future customer. How interesting that that keeps coming up lately.

This is like, a canon event for certain people in our 20s. My first console was an NES, but after it seemingly broke from a fall. I got a Famiclone
with a shell that copied the PlayStation down to having a lid that only covered the cartridge slot, even kid me found that amusing because the games were built-in.
I pin my taste in games on that, and a bit ago I realized. Besides my crooked hand, I find modern 3D games hard because unlike N64, they expect me to manually control the camera

you have the same perspective as me on getting interested about consoles that came 'before your time'. i really enjoy the ps2 but never got to experience its heyday (we were a wii and wii only family), so now i like to try and vicariously experience it lol. magazines, game guides, physical manuals etc are some of my favorite slices back into that time i missed (or in the case of physical manuals, just a pre-existing interest given younger me's autistic obsession with them)

RIGHT AS I GET DINNER YO
