The captain wasn't too keen to go down with the ship. He was tired going down on Smortan. 🚢

“Are we playing the Titanic soundtrack”
Sometimes foreshadowing is fairly obvious.

According to the q&a video on his second channel that the spaghetti was made from expired/near expired ingredients

If you are wondering how the helmsman might've gotten confused between Starboard and Port, it's because the crew were speaking in Italian. "What difference does that make?" You might be wondering... Well, Starboard in Italian is Bordo while Port is Porto.

It was very refreshing to have someone who knows things about ships react to this, he has another video called (ever given ever taken away) that I would love to see you react to in the future.

I just love watching vtubers getting angry at Scattino

welcome to Italy, corruption is second nature to the higher ups there which explains a lot of the oddities in this and other stories where they would rather cut corners than do things properly

Watching Simple Vince's reaction to this video adds some industry context to the incident. He's a sailor and clarifies some points.

They hit the rock at 9:45 or so. The captain was told the ship was going down at 10:09 but didn't call for an evacuation until 10:40 guarantee the majority of the deaths was because of such a huge delay. Then he in his cowardice ditched everyone to do his job for him because he didn't wanna face the consequences of his actions. If schittino was just honest from the get go and did his job with the evacuation he might not of even faced criminal charges or only got hit with causing a shipwreck.

"complacency about procedure" completely describes this entire tragedy. Complacency brought about by lack of oversight and cost-cutting by the operating company Carnival. Of course Carnival is quick to shift blame solely to a single well known public figure and pay a tiny fine. The captain was a useful idiot for Carnival to make a scapegoat out of.

1:05:14 a plea deal is often a deal where the suspect will fully admit to the crime (guilty or not) for a significantly decreased sentence, however in this case they had overwhelming evidence that he was at fault therefore his pleas were rejected

Going from security to a captain is a normal thing by itself. If you have your certification, and found an employer, but your ship is not ready yet, you will be assigned to a "standby" job. Security is an easy choice - you effectively have no metrics or requirements, so you can just be doing it on paper.

My family and i was in this cruise around 3 months before the accident, thank god this doesn't happend when we were there, rest in piece the people that die in this avoidable accident

@adhiseaman1099 9 months ago (edited)

Back in the day when I was working on the cruise ship, this incident was always mentioned when we got our safety training. The Chief Safety Officer said "that incident taught us that the tiniest mistake on a ship could cost so much destruction in just under 24 hours".

36:22 FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE RECOGNIZED THE MUSIC!!! I’ve been losing my mind watching reactions of this and thinking I must be wrong since NO ONE else has commented on it.

I bet some rich billionaire has bought the bell from some kind of black market.

@endgame38 9 months ago

So I couldn't find out what happened to the bell, but I did find out that the same day it was stolen, someone dropped off a statue of the virgin Mary at the local church that had been stolen at the same time as the bell.

To give some context I heard from sailors about him becoming a captain: there aren't that many positions for captains so its not uncommon to find people working in other leadership positions until a spot opens up.

@Flutterdark_ 9 months ago

i feel if the captain was like "hey we hit a rock and need help" from the start he would have gotten less in trouble. since probably less people if any would have died but also because it would be "sorry i fucked up and hit a rock" and not "hey i caused all this"
