I was born in 1954.......which means I was there thru the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and am so happy today's generations are listening to some of the greatest music ever produced and performed. Thanks for the trip back.....the 70s is my favorite musical era for sure.
It puzzles me how Billy Joel was ignored when "Just the Way You Are" [1978] garnered two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1979.
Just saw AJ Croce, the 55 year old son of Jim Croce [Jim died in a plane crash Sept 20, 1973. he did his own song and some covers, but at least 12 of his father's hits and other famous songs interspersed throughout the show. And his stories were extremely funny. When he sang his father's songs his voice was very similar...it was haunting...he never really knew his father and learned from mom and others. Not a dry eye in the house when he sang the last song, Time in a Bottle.
Did you know that "Killing me Softly" was a '73 cover by Roberta Flack, the original written & performed by Lori Lieberman in '72, same year Don McLean's songs of the month, "American Pie" & "Vincent" became popular. I mention him because that's who Lori was writing about after seeing Don performing a song called "Empty Chairs". Finally heard her version last month & was surprised how beautiful it was.
Class of 1976, High School graduation, all this music is right in my wheelhouse. From "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" through "Escape, The Pina Colada Song", my friends and I were living this stuff every day. At this point I was more into straight ahead Rock and Roll, Led Zeppelin, The WHO, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The J. Geils Band, etc., but I heard all of these songs many, many times. The 70's, to me, were the best decade ever.
