An heirloom of pain, a vanished past, and one shocking entry in a military record pull Samantha Womack into the most personal investigation of her life. When a long-held family story about wartime gas poisoning collides with a sniper’s bullet, the truth veers in an unexpected direction.
Following clues from Scots Guards archives to the Highland Light Infantry and the Royal Garrison Artillery, Sam uncovers a musician-turned-soldier whose split-second decision spiraled into desertion, prison, and a secret he tried to bury. In London, a child’s orphanage record whispers of loss; in New York and Jersey City, a stage name, a stark photograph, and an Erie Street address redraw the map of her great-grandmother’s world. And somewhere between Bertha and Beatrice lies the identity her family could never quite name.
How did a stolen instrument change a man’s fate? Why did a mother leave, and what finally brought a daughter across the Atlantic? Watch to see the twists come together and what Sam takes home from the past.
Watch now to uncover the full story.
