The shot starting at 12:00 just so extra. The way pyrotechnics must have rigged up that fire to flare up just in the right time to illuminate the British... Shockingly impressive
Rather unsurprisingly I love many of the scenes with Napoleon. So many of them show the man behind the legend that made an entire era be named after him, not only that but they also show his vulnerability, his regret, his weariness after so many years of conquest. Rod Steiger did a masterful job of portraying a figure whose legend and legacy often times surpasses his character.
Everyone who fought in that battle knew that it was an important one. Napoleon defeated Prussia and humiliated them by forcing them into an alliance. In the face of a strong, professional, national army the King was weak and betrayed his country. The Prussians wanted to beat Napoleon as payback, and to recover their honor. They "forced" a victory on their king, and sealed their reputation.
I like when the British infantry are getting their little tot of rum or gin and the guy says drink up lads the French will have it out of you in bit , or words to that effect
My two favorite scenes are when Napoleon (stiger) screams I will not not NOT! ABDICATE! The other is when Napoleon says those men on gray horses are truly terrifying! His aid says the most noble Calvary in all of Europe! Napoleon replys and the worst led match them with our lancers and you hear the bugles sound and the lancers set for charge .
Ahh... Practical effects. Thousands of extras. No CGI. Immaculate set design. Amazing costumes. And filmed with actual colour, light and warmth opposed to most modern historical films deciding to wash everything out and make it look matte and grey. This is a style and age of film making never to return but I'm glad we got it.
Looking on this, if I were in command, I would have shaved off those squares from one side, like shaving my own face. The other squares could not do a damn thing. Glad I'm sitting behind a PC and not on the actual battle field, LOL.
Yes, there was a "Ball" before the Battle of Waterloo. However, it was was described by some , who were there , as more a barn dance. It was much more rustic then shown in this "Hollywood" prodrction.
